Best place to buy a new clutch-kit?
 

Okay, so I took my car to the Mazda-dealership and then another mechanic for a second opinion, and they both concur that my clutch is totally gone! So I need to buy a new clutch or clutch-kit. My Mazda-tech. recommended that I just go ahead and buy and install the whole kit while we're down there. I got a price-quote and part# for an OEM '93 RX-7 clutch-kit from the paarts-department; part# N315-16-490MV costs $220.35 USD.

Should I buy this kit from the Mazda-dealership, or should I look elsewhere for an OEM or aftermarket clutch-kit?

Would you also recommend that I purchase an entire clutch-kit, or would a clutch-disc suffice?

Oh yeah, also, the Mazda-tech said that it would cost $500-$600 USD to install the new clutch. Do you think that is a fair price?

Dude, stop going to a "mazda-tech" first of all. Second I don't know what your mods are so you might need to list those before people can suggest whether you go with an aftermarket clutch or stay with a stock one.

BTW - If you're interested I'll be selling my stock clutch very soon (prob. this weekend), as I'm installing my aftermarket clutch this week. The clutch is in excellent condition and has only about 3000 miles worth of driving on it. PM me if you're interested, it'll be cheaper than buying it new and from the dealer. Let me know.

I do not have very many under-hood mods, and I do not race the car; my main goal is just to make the car driveable again.

Then I would suggest sticking with the stock clutch. I have around 300ish rwhp and I was still running the stock clutch until now. Never ever gave me one problem and absolutely no slipping.

Go with an OEM replacement from Exedy, it's the only brand I would recommend other than what you could get from the dealership. I got a kit for my FC off of eBay from a store called Gripforce. They are an authorized dealer for Exedy clutches. I can vouch saying that my kit is genuine, their feedback is also 100% . Here's a link for your FD. ^ Is that the exedy carbon organic clutch you got for that price? Seems like its very cheap, exedy stuff is usually WAYYYY more expensive.

The Mazda clutch kit is a great value for the price. If you're staying stock or near-stock, I'd go for it. It comes with all the extras, too.

Doing a clutch job on an FD isn't anything out of the ordinary. An experienced mechanic with a lift should be able to do it in 3-5 hours. Their quote is a tad high, but not that bad. If they've done the job before and know the tricks of the trade, that might be in their favor.

Anyhow, I'd say get the Mazda clutch kit - that's a really good way to go.
