Best performing/looking boost gauge on a budget?
Any opinions? I'm curious if anyone has any experience with some not as well known brands of gauges...

Re Amemiya w/pod to go on the steering column! unless you are making high boost cause it only reads to 1.5kg/ cm2

Best looking = stock appearance? Or something else?
On a budget = $?? You do sort of get what you pay for. I'm happy with my $40 autometer, which matches the stock gauges pretty well. It all goes up$$ from there. Dave |
Defi D series with the black face. I believe 100-120 is the average price for those each.
Matches up to stock fd gauges the most IMO, and the lighting is the same color. If you have a certain preference, its hard to get it at the price you want. |
For stock looks I still think the VDO Vision's are nearly perfect. The looks and lighting are very close to stock and you can even get them with chrome bezels now. They cost about $25 apiece and my boost and water temp gauges have been perfect for years now.

I've been using all Stewart Warner gauges. They are pretty close to the stock look but the backlight is red not orange. From all I can tell they are mechanically the same as Autometer gauges, though the faces are slightly larger while still fitting in the 52mm footprint. Can't complain, they seem accurate enough and respond smoothly at least for now.

Those are some great suggestions, guys. Thanks... I wasn't very clear in what I meant as far as looks/price, was I?
I was looking for something that matched the stock gauges as closely as possible, but wanted to stay at $100.00 or less, so you guys helped a lot! |

Blitz turbo timer/digital boost gauge. It's accurate, small enough to fit on the steering column and not obstruct the tach, has a peak hold function, and costs around $100.

I have the D-Series boost gauge and I replaced the Auto Meter boost gauge that I had which matched PERFECT with the stock gauges. I have not noticed any difference in the two gauges. If I had it all to do over again I would just have kept the Auto Meter gauge. The DEFI gauge does look nicer and it has a normal vacuum hose off the back of it instead of the stupid hard plastic line (which always cracks over time) on the Auto Meter.

That's the Autometer I'm talking about. It is a great match. Dave |
I would like the autometer except for the yellow markings on vacuum readings. The yellow doesn't match stock at all.

The PFS boost gauge matches perfectly.
|
on the defi link series do you have to have the control unit? i broke the lil plastic vacuum line on my autometer and now need a new boost gauge

heres a couple of pics of my guages. boost and water temp. they are the new version 2 gauges from greddy. I think they match perfect. they both seem very well made. I cant speak to their accuracy though.....

PFS boost gauge matches very well and is the classic boost gauge. Peter himself put thought into it from an RX-7 perspective. So much of the 3rd gen old guard is no longer.

I like the Autometer 0-20psi boost (0-30 mmHg vacuum) gauge, because the range seems more useful for our cars. I wonder how some people are able to discern 10psi vs. 8 psi on some of these other gauges.

I also switched from Autometer to Defi 'D' series, and the plastic tube was a PITA. Along with the yellow vacuum markings and dim and uneven backlight from the condom covered bulb. The only thing I regret is that it was a Pettit Racing -Autometer, so obviously the car was much faster with it. But still, I like the DEFI better. It's too bad that they discontinued at least some of the guages in that series. If I had to do it now, and on a budget, those VDO look decent, depending on how they look at night.
Anyway, if you found some left over stock, or used, here's what they look like. http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3...s018oi3.th.jpg http://img416.imageshack.us/img416/7...s017yn7.th.jpg At night, sorry about the bad focus. |
If you want to oem look, check out Omori.

WHere did you get your gauges from? I dont see them on teh greddy website velocityfactor.net When I bought them, I thought I was getting the old black/green ones. I was pleasantly suprised when I saw the boost gauge tho. The only problem was I had to wait 4 weeks for the temp gauge.(it was backordered) Their website still shows the gauges as black/green, so its a little unclear exactly what gauges you can get in the new color combo. |
I dont kknow man.. paying $200 USD and more for a gauge doesnt seem logical to me..
