Best Oil to use to break in engine
 

Is there any particular conventional oil that is better for braking in a new engine? I remember reading somewhere that one of the oils is better I think it was havoline due to its ingredients, it could be just BS but I wanted to know if any of you would recommend one oil over another

I'm not sure about brands, but Racing Beat just recommended using mineral oils for breaking in engine and not synthetics. They said due to the lack of friction with synthetics it takes MUCH longer to break in an engine with it than mineral oils.

What are the basic rules to breaking in the engine? How many miles should the break in be?

I used Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50 (non-synthetic).

1. first 500 miles: rpms <4k and minimal boost

2. change oil

3. next 1000 miles: rmps <6k and a little boost, still below WOT

4. change oil

5. Go destroy all domestics in your area :D

i think 20-50 is a bit too thick! Id go 10-30

Im new here and with the whole rotary thing. Altho I have over 15 yrs worth of sportbike experience that I think what Ive learned over the yrs might be helpful in breaking in a motor. Someone please correct me if Im wrong.:)

One of the keys to breaking in a motor is avoiding long periods of cruising (i.e. droning along at the same RPM). Unlike what many ppl think, highways are the worst place to break in a motor.
Many ppl think its just a mileage thing so they hit the highways wanting to speed up the break-in period. I think all motors are relative when it comes to break-in.

So with that comment, heres my suggestion. Somethng to remember is to just enjoy the car out in the backroads just like you would any other day. Keeping the revs & boost on the low side(like goodfella said) for atleast 300-500 miles. At this point dumping the oil, I think, is overdoin it but hell what are we talking about $15?, if it makes you feel better.......DUMP IT!
After that, I'd say its safe to increase the revs a bit more w/ every hundred miles you put on but again NOT keeping her locked in at any RPM. Run her up to 5-6k RPM then back off and keep those kinda spurts goin on and off till ya see another 500 miles. On the last 100 miles(1000 miles total), I wld pretty much start running her up close to redline this way the whole range has been explored and broken in before putting in fresh oil that will remain in there for the next 2000-2500 miles.
