Best Fuel filter?

Whats the best fuel filter?

I was going to get a mazda one but the local dealer wants $150 for the filter. What other options are there, or is the mazda one the best?

rxrotary2_7 09-17-01 10:51 PM

what? are you serious? my dealer is about $34. i would try another place that sells oem parts like mazdtrix or someting.

Zoomspeed 09-17-01 10:56 PM

Completely serious, last time I was there I asked and they told me $150 with a 1 or 2 week wait.

i know there is a web site for mazda oem parts, like a deler site w/ listngs on it. it would be interesting to find it, print it out and take it to them and ask why such a large mark up?

I've seen that site, but can't remember the address. I've got a friend at a dealer aroud here and he quoted me their list (this is an arbitrary price normally about 2x their cost) price as ~$60, their retail was ~$40. That would put dealer cost at ~$30. That dealer who quoted you $150 is either looking at the wrong part, is really trying to seriously rip you off, or is just smoking crack. Go somewhere else.

Gallery Group has it for $37.60. I've never ordered from them but I think other people have said they're ok.

Best Fuel filter?

$150.00 FUEL FILTER !!!!! Are YOU Crazy ???

Seriously way toooooo high. I've gotten mine a Discount Auto it's a Purolator brand and fits in stock location for only $22.00 Hope this helps... I'll try and find the part number it's listed in the filter book in the stores.:D

DamonB 09-18-01 08:49 AM

I got the Purolator filter from Pep Boys and it replaced the stock one exactly. It was under $30. Do a search, I know I posted part numbers and prices.

$150????? :uzi: :fruit:

I have a K&N, it's suppose to flow much better. Much nicer piece than stock

Bacon 09-18-01 10:24 AM

yea k&n mini with 5/16 ends...flows like 15gpm...billet with a stainless mesh filter...filters to .1micron..and best of all..50bux but its WASHABLE!.....

Silver7 09-18-01 02:57 PM

I believe the K&N filters down to 10 microns. Also beware if you buy this filter. If you don't clean the disc regularly it will clog up and damage the disc. I called K&N and talked to them about this after my filter failed.

Touring FD3S 09-18-01 04:19 PM

You sure they didn't think you meant pump? I paid 29.99 at my dealership about a month ago. I would check with the dealer one more time to make sure it is the filter they are talking about.

I'll check with them again. Hopefully they were looking at the wrong part.

gsxr1000 09-18-01 07:23 PM

Josh,

how did you know your K&N had failed? just curious

I have been cleaning mine every 5,000 miles or so...backwashing the disc with brake cleaner

Mark

The fuel filter is not an easy part to remove or replace so the K&N might be better but is it worth the trouble @ 5k miles? Not to me. I have always gone with OEM fuel filters because I think they are the best as far as lasting the longest and going a good job. There are just some parts that you would rather go OEM on.
www.rx7.com does sell the OEM piece cheap and I believe there is a fitment issue if you use thier own RP filter $25.

You get what you pay for.

DefBringer 09-18-01 11:36 PM

$150 probably includes the labor.

$150 is a rip. Even those shysters here in Olathe don't charge that much....

all i can say is have u ever take one appart?

i have its the bigest pos ive ever seen...its basically a roll of toilet paper wraped around an alumium tube..i dont understand how it flowed shit..let alone filter anything...i cant belive mazda would uses that pos....
oem is not always best imho..but theres not much in the way of up grades for this part...every 5k seems alot..but im anal abt matinece..once u put the k&n in its not that hard to get the filer..prob like a 20min job start to finish....

but isnt it the same filter as on a miata? only we flow 2x as much fuel..?
