best coil over kit?
i was thinking of purcahsing a coil over kit for my 93 touring. i got hte idea because my friend jsut installed an apex kit on his and i love all the adjustability. so now comes the question, which kit seems to work best for the car. fit, ease of adjustment, overallperformance. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks, scott

I've got the latest issue and they had a comparison test with all the Coilover kits available to the RX7. The Mazdaspeed coilover didn't have as good of ratings as I expected. Best ratings for the dollar were the TEIN HA or Sustec PRO for around 11,000yen. For around 30,000 yen Ohlins game out near the top, and some Japnese comanies came out with perfect scores.
Although TEINs did do pretty well in the ratings with an exception for the NR, I have a couple of friends with TEIN suspension and they rust overtime . M2 Advanced for the price is currently the best coilover suspension made in the US, be ready for long wait though. There are many others JRZ, Penske, it really depends on your application and what type of a budget you have. |
what about the apex kit, has anyone heard good or bad from it, thanks, scott

Im in the same boat as well. I want a coilover kit or a suspension kit. I want something with great ride and performance as well(not bouncy). I was wondering if a coilover kit is better with shocks or just springs with shock? i hear that coilover kits are more bouncy than springs. thanks please reply

I have the SARD coilovers on my 3rd gen.
It is the SARD GT-SPEC coilovers used for endurance race in some of the Japanese cars in the GT class in Japan. I know not alot of 3rd gen owners got this coilovers but I experience it first hand handling was very noticeable, it is ride height adjustable, and you could adjust the stiffness to your preference front 4 ways adjustable and rear 8 ways adjustable in minutes. I got it for $2300.

I have the Ground Control coilovers. If you're sticking with the stock shock the adjustability is great. And the ride is firmer than stock (like R1) but nothing crazy.
However, you upgrade your shocks you'll have to make sure you make the coilover sit right. For example, I own Koni sport shocks. The shocks alone dropped the car another 1-2 inches. The front was extremely low and I had to get the coilovers to sit a bit higher. Right now the fronts are at their highest setting which leaves about an inch or 2 of clearence between the tire and the fender. The backs have more room to play with than the fronts. Apart from that the car rides really nice. And you can take the corners alot better. The stock suspension felt floaty at times which kind of made me nervous. But now the car just squats and goes.
