Bastard little storage pocket cover

Today while closing my door the pocket cover feel off and passed by the bottom edge of the door opening just in time for the door to break it into about 20 pieces. For the love of god why?!!!!

kyle@insight 01-21-04 03:17 PM

ROFL because you drive an FD. That's why :)

ObliqueFD 01-21-04 03:28 PM

Good luck finding a new cover! Seems like everyone is looking for one.

911GT2 01-21-04 03:52 PM

That sucks Chris. Get out the super glue and give it hell! lol. It doesn't serve to much of a purpose anyway, so it's no big loss.

Isn't it fun owning an FD?

And BTW, why are you driving your car in the winter? What are you thinking living in Boston? Get a beater, it's the best investment I've ever made for the FD.

adam c 01-21-04 03:55 PM

I just saw the Bastard part, and figured I was supposed to say something :)

Does Mazda still sell those things?

Chris, call Ray Crowe, see if he can get one without having to order the whole door trim.

cavellm 01-21-04 04:04 PM

When I called Mazda to replace mine, they sell you th e whole little compartment, for a steal at only $180.

Bad thing is I broke mine just sitting in the car before I even bought it. A week later I bought the car, but it was too late to do a switcheroo from another FD in the lot.

David Beale 01-21-04 04:21 PM

When I covered my dash and door plastic with leather I had to remove the cover. Pretty lame hinge! I replaced the hinge pin with an aircraft grade titanium screw.

My car goes much faster now! ;)

dgeesaman 01-21-04 04:55 PM

FYI: Ray's price on the pocket assy is around $120.

hehe, yeah i broke mine as well...... twice! the hinge broke the first time... i bought the new mazda piece (the 94 bumpy plastic which by the way does not match the original stuff) and then 2 weeks later that hinge broke! i took it back to mazda and they told me too bad.... i really hate mazda parts.... later that night i left an old broken mazda rim that id been meaning to get rid of, and a container of used coolant for them to dispose of........ haha it made me feel better (they are really jerks to me at this parts dept)... now i use malloy mazda and its literally 1/2 the price

scratchjunkie 01-21-04 07:36 PM

Earlier, in another thread I said my car was almost prestine! I forgot I fixed this earlier... damn.

I David Beale-ed mine with a screw too, when the plastic dowel broke. Then it was looser and the door rattled, so I increased the tension on the "cam" spring. That was fine for a day, then apparently, the spring pressure was too much so the plastic cracked at the hole, preventing the door from being held down.

Refusing to pay $180 to fix something that'll just break again in a year, I fabbed up a little bracket out of a galvanized sheet steel and mounted it to the screws that hold the spring on. So effectively, the "hole" for the dowel (now a screw) is made of metal as well.

It worked out great, but still, I'm never opening that f***ing pocket again. I tell people it's just an armrest. :)

SanJoRX7 01-22-04 03:45 PM

Sounds liek it's time to fab that panel as well as the rest of your door panels in CF :)

$120 for plastic? I'd leave it broke and eyeball it funny until it fixed itself.

LOL

I'm planning a fix on mine. The door operates properly...at the moment. But somebody in the past apparently used it as a brace to get out of the car and it now has a small crack in the lid. I'm thinking of doing something similar as mentioned earlier in replacing the plastic dowel and screw but adding sometype of lamanent under the lid for strength. Thin balsa wood perhaps? Anybody got suggestions.

I took Devcon 2-part epoxy and ran a thick bead along in the edge farthest from the driver. It made a good bond and seemed to strengthen what was pathetically weak. One hinge was busted and I never got it fixed decently.

Then somebody put a NIB pocket for sale here for $60 and I was on that like Peter North shooting on fake boobies.
