Bare Minimum rebuild

Lets say you have a motor that still runs, if alot of the parts are reusable such as the rotors, turbos and housings, how much do you guys think i can do a bare cost rebuild for? i tried searching but the words "rebuild" and "cost" wont get you far cuz thats all this forum talks about haha. Thanks for help.

The best way for you to find out in your situation and location would be to call the places that could rebuild your engine.
Tell them the situation, and ask prices.

Just the HARD seals (apex, corner, side, oil control etc) and internal soft seals (water, oil) will run $850+ min and the external install gasket set (intake, exhaust, water pump etc) will be $250+ so you are looking at $1100 min in parts w/o any labor or replacing ANY major parts.

I guess unless you can do it yourself that's the reason most people opt for the Mazda remanufactured engine. If you have to replace a housing you've blown your wad.;)

Try R&R Rotary in Upland. They had the cheapest price by far for a rebuild when I was looking. They told me $3,000 for the motor and the remove and replace plus expect to need new primary injectors, motor mount, misc hoses and a silicone vacuum line job if your over 80,000 miles. How's your clutch and 5th gear syncro? Don’t you just love having a sports right up until it breaks!

well, mine is costing $5500 so be happy that yours doesnt cost that much!! :)

I am currently rebuilding my motor, fairly thoroughly, and I am right around $800-900.
That's including:
Teflon encapulated silicone orings
RA apex seals
RC cleaned and balanced injectors
new corner seals
new omp lines
viton oil control rings
plus mostly new soft seals (all the critical or semi critical ones are being replaced.)

I'm probably forgetting something in my list, but you get the picture.

Thank you Mazdamotor sports :) I'd easily have $300+ into it without them.

It all depends on what your going to replace. If the seals are within the proper thickness, I would replace the springs. I would also replace the oil control rings/springs. I would change the stock apex seals with the new 2 piece(stock)apex seals. You could also buy a FC3S o-ring kit which is a lot cheaper than the FD3S o-ring kit.

Trust me about cheap....I've done rebuilds that cost me $90~(reusing all used parts).

How many miles are on your motor? Reusing high mileage housings and bearings is asking for trouble.

jspecracer7 01-29-04 03:28 AM

Rich just reminded me about that....REPLACE THE ROTOR/STATIONARY GEAR BEARINGS.

GoodfellaFD3S 01-29-04 06:26 AM

The only way a quality cheap rebuild is possible is with knowledge. If you're trying it yourself for the first time, best of luck to ya. I hope you have a daily driver ;)
