Bad engine???

Took my car to the mazda dealer as it was running rough and was told it has a bad motor and it's not cheap. I am thinking it's mod time and I may get a streetportd motor...Is it worth it? I am in the Richmond Va. area.

To take full advantage of a streetport you really need to have an aftermarket exhaust system, dp, intake, etc.
Even on a completely stock car you will net a few hp with porting, but not anything like you would see with the right mods. Obviously the only time you can port an engine is during a rebuild, so this is the time to do it.

However there is one thing you do need to know, do not ever trust the Mazda dealer. Did they do a compression test on the car? if they did what were the numbers? Running rough could easily be that your plugs need be changed, not your engine.

I sm guessing tha they checked all of the simple stuff......map sensor....park plugs...etc.... I wouldn't trust mazda. Take it to a shop osomewhere in the area...or have it towed to KD Rotary, PFS, marvelspeed, or one of the other shops

I don't remember the numbers but I think the bad one was 4's? Anyhow I pretty sure I want a streetport what's a competitive price ?

I have a downpipe and a catback now.

That is pretty bad, better than 0 though. It really depends on if you are going to remove/install the engine yourself or want a shop to do it for you. Labor rates vary from shop to shop. Obviously if you want a shop to do the work, then your best bet is to call around to a few of the local places mentioned in your particular regional section.
