Bad Ebay key!!

I was looking on Ebay because i needed a backup key. I found this one and purchased it. When i went to get it cut by a locksmith he doubted it was the right key. So i went home and sure enough it didnt work. But the description for the key said for the 93-95 RX-7. Just letting you know so you dont do the same.

The ebay seller is NTBK and his store is also the same. I will post his webpage later.

Here is what the key looks like.

Ohhhhh, I think DamonB got one of those with a lock set i beleive.

allenhah 07-28-04 03:58 PM

Oh no I just bought one too!! Have you tried contacting the seller?

DamonB 07-28-04 03:59 PM

Yeah, I bought one but haven't had it cut yet since I haven't installed the new lock cylinders. I'll see if mine will slide into the ignition and doors. As long as it does it should cut just fine?

If the key will slide into the lock then the key is fine. If the key will slide into the lock but yet not turn and unlock the door then the key was not cut correctly...

ttrx74me 07-28-04 04:01 PM

I tried contacting the seller today, so far nothing. It slid into the ignition, but thats about it. Its like its too short and the groove in the middle is wider than the stock key.

RotorJoe 07-28-04 04:19 PM

Fuck, Don't tell me this. I ordered one the other day. It should be her next week. Accounts have been charged already.

The grooves on the key are only for it to slip into the lock cylinder; they don't matter as long as the key can enter the cylinder. If the key will slip all the way into the cylinder and is as long as the original the key will work. The only thing that keeps the key from turning is the "teeth" on the key not being cut correctly in order to line up all the tumblers.

If the key is the proper length and slides into the cylinder yet doesn't operate the mechanism then the key is cut wrong.

It's very hard to tell from the grainy picture but the teeth on each side of the key should be exactly the same; they key can be inserted either side up and operate the lock. Yours looks different on each side?

Seriously... now im glad i didnt buy two of them. I looked through his rating and found one that also said the key wasnt the right one...

ttrx74me 07-28-04 04:27 PM

when i get home i will take a pic with the 2 keys side by side. i swear it is short.

GoRacer 07-28-04 04:29 PM

I bought an Efini ket from JT-Imports and it works perfect. The only problem I had was the automatic machines couldn't cut it and I had to find a locksmith place that still did it by hand.

ttrx74me 07-28-04 04:30 PM

I had a locksmith do it by hand, everything looked perfect... maybe ill be getting an Efini key.

If it's short that could be a problem... I'll compare mine when I get home tonight.

I don't think it is the same seller, but I bought a key blank off eBay last year that looks just like this one and it works fine. The size and shape was the same in all ways, but it may be that other Mazda models have used different cylinders and the one you got was for one of them.

allenhah 07-28-04 04:38 PM

Hmmm...well I'm going to wait on the feedback until I get the key cut and tried.

One of my pet peeves with eBay: Sellers who wait until AFTER they receive positive feedback from the buyer to provide positive feedback. If I'm buying something from you, and I paid you the money promptly, I expect to receive a positive feedback immediately, despite what my feedback is for you. I mean...as a buyer, that really is my only obligation.

(just venting...not really all too upset about all this. If it's $20 bucks down the drain, oh well. I think I might just get the Efini replacement key as well.)

ttrx74me 07-28-04 04:41 PM

Same here, $20 down the drain!! haha

RotorJoe 07-28-04 04:43 PM

Go take better pictures of both and repost please.

I have had a key cut before and visually you could not tell the difference. But the new key did not work and the old worn out one did. Showed the lock smith and he cut another. This one worked it was just a little sticky. He then stated that locks were probably wearing down and could be replaced. Either way I sold the car and never worried about it.Could this be a factor?

ttrx74me 07-28-04 04:45 PM

I will take the pic with my digital camera instead of my phone when i get home. Hey, anything is possible.

RotorJoe 07-28-04 04:51 PM

Please and Thank You should have been in my post above.

I just hate going through the process of getting your money back through paypal and the seller. $20 bucks is worth the hassle though. Anyways that cash was already allocated to a key so I would be forced to buy another. :-)

By the way I like your Avatar.

ttrx74me 07-28-04 04:58 PM

hahaha yea i was thinking the same thing, just wish mine looked that good!!!

GoRacer 07-28-04 05:03 PM

Oh on my CRX, I had new or orginals cut via VIN # and they did not work worth a crap. I made a generic copy from my plastic AAA key and it works perfect. The generic copy doen't have all the small cuts like spikes but rather flat plataus and valleys (if that makes sense).

Thats damn near exactly how mine looks.

I just got the same key, had it cut at the Mazda dealer. When the guy came out he said "i hope it works. there are 2 wings at the tip that the machine didn't cut off. It looks like a correct Mazda blank though"

He didn't charge me, so off home I went.

Well it worked fine in the ignition but not the door locks, so I got some metal snips and a file and carefully removed the 'wings' at the end and voila it works perfect in both doors and the ignition.

DamonB 07-28-04 05:21 PM

I have a brand new complete lockset sitting here in front of me. My uncut ebay key won't slip into any of the cylinders more than about a 1/4". The key looks right but the grooves must be too narrow as it won't slip into any of the cylinders.

Sorry guys :(

Maybe the quality of the manufacture is poor and so some work but some won't?

Section8 07-28-04 05:22 PM

P.S. I'll take pictures of my key tonight if you guys are interested.

That could be the case. I wouldn't beat yourself up about it, there's no way you could have known. Besides, I'm happy - mine works :o:
