Bad day, FD down.

Well it started off by me going to pick up my gf and noticing that on the pfc it said 11.0 volts. Didnt think anything of it and later on in the night we decided to go to sonic to get something to drink. I get my drinks etc. start to pull away and my car starts to idle really hard. I look at the pfc and its at 6 volts. I start to pull away and it dies.

Triple A wont be out there for another hour so were just waiting around trying to get the car to work. With my luck, what do you know a pack of camaros decides to eat at sonic. You can guess how that went. So anyways a truck comes out and checks out my car and decides it needs to be towed, alternator is dead btw. He already has a car on the flat bed so he has to call for another truck. Another hour later the truck comes and is loading my car on the flatbed and my front lip just eats it. :-\ and then he took me home.

So anyways just venting about the shitty outcomes of today lol How much would a new alternator cost?

RotaryEvolution 01-28-07 01:34 AM

well.. next time when your voltage is low i bet you won't be driving around leisurely now will you? :p:

new factory alternators are ~$265 iirc, aftermarket rebuilt units are anywhere from $125 to $180.

sevensix 01-28-07 01:35 AM

i had a similar thing happen to me a year ago. took me ~5hrs to get the car home and $110. and yes the front lip / rear lip always eats it :)

alternator isn't too pricey, you can get a used one for $100-150 shipped. good luck.

streetRx7 01-28-07 01:37 AM

well look on the bright side .....its not the... you know motor...
As far as alternator...do a search you can find it here used cheap...

vtakk eg 01-28-07 01:40 AM

when something breaks it means upgrade, so just get one of thouse JDM Top Fuel ones
i dont think it would be any better than the stock one but i looks cool as hell

RotaryEvolution 01-28-07 01:41 AM

an upgraded alternator would mean a downgrade in performance. more drag=less power.

Upgraded alternators don't create anymore drag than a normal alternator. High-output alternators are normally rewired so that there's more copper wiring wrapped around them. That's why you can get rewired alternators instead of having to buy new. I'm sure once you get up there in wattage though, they do change out... I guess the gearing? But I would expect that to be on the extreme side of things.

Speedworks 01-28-07 05:29 AM

buy a used one and have yours rebuild as a spare

Are you guys having the car towed on flatbed? When my car was dropped with 18s, a flatbed tow-truck barely did any damage to the front lip. Just wondering.....

And what is your point? How could you buy a car expecting it is going to break? Take care of it, don't run it like a rice-man in a Honda nad it will serve you well.

Woudnt have been a shitty day if you looked into why you were having voltage drop from the get go. Could have borrowed a car or searched and solved problem right away. Shame, shame on you for actually having the capability to monitor voltage and ignore it. At least it is a simple problem. We all live and learn. G

If you get a good tow driver who has towed nice cars before and who has planks on his truck it's not a problem. My car is slammed to the ground and it's never been an issue getting onto a flatbed.

Whose saying i dont take care of it? Its obviously eventually going to go. As far as people saying i ignored the problem or w.e, when i got back in the car the second time to go to sonic the voltage was back to normal.

My car was towed on a flatbed and all the way up the lip was scrapping :-\.

Sorry about the car man.

But damn, that just adds another check to the "rx7s are unreliable" check list for domestics. It seems like by coincidence, for them its the truth. It happened to me last year.

This is when i was having my stalling problem btw. I was trying numerous things to pinpoint what the problem was. When i would do something, i would drive around the blocks to see if it solved it. One time i was at a light, ONLY 2 blocks from home and a vette pulled next to me. Not a modded one, im sure it was stock and it was just a reg C5. The guy looked at me and smiled and i smiled back. Then when the light turned green, he waited there for me to jump first (i guess he thought we were gonna race?), then with my luck, the car, like the problem it had at the time, stalled at the light.

I was hoping he thought i just stalled out and not cause the car had a problem cause that was embarssing. lol

I never said you didn't take care of it. I said because it is @ 82k doesn't eman it is gonna let go tommorow, this year or even next year.

When alternators go, they go full stop. Happened in my Honda this winter doesn't take anything away from the FD.

efranklin 01-28-07 12:03 PM

I know it doesnt take anything away from the FD. I was just stating that eventually the engine will go. Could be a week from now could be a year from now ;).

And whatever happened to those boost issues? Still racing on a partially working car?
