Is This Bad?
When i was checking antifreez in the canister where antifreez is kept. I'm talking about the canister on the right (when Facing Engine) behind headlight.
I took the cap off and on the stick i found a little oil on, It's really small but you can see it's a black and i know it smells like oil. I just wonna know is this bad and what does this mean? Thanks |

Well this is the first time i checked it, I flushed the sytem recently but i couln't flush that canister. The engine runs fine, Vacum is on 17 at idle, it doesn't smoke or anything cold hot or at wot. Starts every time, I'm not missing any oil or antifreez. And yes it is my first engine with 64k on it.

Everybody gets that. Dont no where it comes from.
|
Are you talking about on the passenger side or the driver side (US editions) behind the headlight?
|
Iam I worng in thinking the over flow tank is on the passanger side looking at the engine in fron tof the car. and the fill cap is right next to it to the right.
|
The windshield wiper fluid bottle is on the driver side behind the headlight. The one on the passenger side is the coolant overflow tank.

looks like dirt, but it smells like oil i think. And it is on the passenger side behind headlight.

i get sluge build up on the dipstick from the overflow tank. i wipe it off when i check the level. so far no ill effects.

I think i may have another problem. Today was around 90 degreez outside, and i was driving my fd for an hour or so, it reached 220 degreez with the fan's runing on slow. Now when i shut her off, i looked through the window and i see that she threw some of the antifreez out throught the ast. Why is that? Too much antifreez or something else?

Check the hoses to the AST, especially where they connect to the nipples. You may need to replace a hose. The one from the filler neck to the AST needed to be replaced on mine a little while ago. I noticed it when installing my BOV. |
I think it leaked through the ast, cause the antifreez is on the plastik right below the ast, I think i overfilled it yesterday, so that's why it threw it out. I know all hoses are fine.
|
That black gunk is combustion byproducts tha get forced past the coolant(O-Ring) seals during cold startups - flush the tank by pulling the overflow hose off the AST and use some dish soap in the tank to break down the oil and junk then force water in through the tank filler neck with a garden hose to flush it all out through the overflow hose. Then rechek for carbon/oil deposits after a week or so - a few clumps on the dip stick are OK but a large accumulation can mean the o-rings are on their way out.
|
i would not drive it until you fix the problem. overheating can be FATAL.
|
Yeah Iam an idiot. Its on the driver side.
|
I ment the over flow tank on the passanger side.

Well anyone has any other thoughts on this other problem of mine? Yesterday, i opened both caps, the ast one and the one on the engine where antifreez goes When i opened them both, i saw that AST fluid started to raise and the engine one started to drop, So idiot as i am, i closed ast and added more to the engine, and today when it was parked in front of the store where i went to buy something, nothing happend. But when i parked it home i saw that it threw it out. Is it because i overfilled it, or something else. It was really hot today. |

I have pettit AST, and it has that cap with the trigger that you have to lift up in order to turn. I don't know what to do then.
|
Amel, can you hear your coolant boiling when you shut down?
|
ok this is what i did. AST was full to the top, so i took half out and i went for a drive, when i came back after 2 min idling i shut it off.
I did hear some kind of gurgling or boiling or i don't know what kind of noice coming from the top cap on the engine. Not the ast or pasenger canister. IT was below the yellow cap where you can fill the coolant to the engine. It didn't threw any antifreez out or anything now that i took half of it out from the AST. |
You probably overfilled it and it spilled the coolant out.
Keep an eye on your temps. If you haven't done the fan mod, now would be a really good time. The fans don't usually come on until 230F, I believe, on a stock FD. As far as the gurgling sound, that's just heat soak. Once you turn the car off, the coolant isn't moving any more so it soaks up the heat. |
