Axle C-clip: Fitting in an aftermarket LSD
 
I am installing a Carbonetic LSD, trying to get the axles to lock into place.... However it seems the C-clip on the end is preventing from doing so. I looked inside the LSD where the splines are and there is groove for the clip to sit in like the factory Torsen. I decided to remove them and they slide in fine, but you can still pull them out a little bit once they hub/kunkle and sus arms are all tight.... What do you guys do with the c-clips on the axle? Not run them?

Are you using new C-clips? Sometimes once a clip is pulled out and espcially if it is removed from the axle, it can open up a bit and become too wide to fit properly.

^ is true. Its usually hard to to the axle back in. I would always use the c slip.

I was reusing the original ones. I tried it without removing them, then again took them off and tried to tighten them up, but no it would open back up a bit when putting them on, maybe I am putting the on wrong. I guess it won't hurt to get some new ones. But I still do not see any groove for the retaining clip to sit in to lock it in place... And what do you guys use to force them into position?

In your 1st post it seems you said that there is a groove for the clip to seat, but you are saying that there isnt?? I unfortunately have no experience with that brand of LSD, so maybe I am of no help. I know with my KAAZ in my old FC I used the retaining clips.

The factory Torsen has a groove cut into the splines about 1/2" from the center of the Diff, the Carbonetic does not, its straight splines.... I would have to pull them out and look again, but I don't think they are splined the whole way, I think it may stop around that same area the groove is cut on the OEM torsen, gotta look again, it was late that night and though to see.... I am going to call them and ask about this. And the whole issue could just be be not being able to seat them properly, I had a heck of a time prying them out, I have no clue how to seat them in...

I just finished up installing a Carbonetics 1.5 LSD with 4.77 KG gears.
Planning some break in drives this week as soon as I get the rear brakes back on and put the undertrays back.

The axles will go in, but it does require a little technique.

I found the procedure in another thread here on the forum, can't recall where just now.

Here's the gist of it: Make sure the gap in the clip is facing upwards, and insert the axle as far as it will easily push. Pull it back out a bit, say 1/2 - 3/4 inch, then give it a good shove, and it will pop in.

One of the threads I found said that the c-clips had to be closed up as much as possible with a pair of pliers before the axles would go in - I didn't find that to be necessary.

Done and Done!


Called Malloy ordered new clips, 10mins later couldn't wait any longer... pulled the hubs and axle back out, reformed the clips, installed them, pushed the axles back in, 100% easier if you fully remove the hubs/kunckles! Bolted everything back up, got alittle dizzy!


The Carbonetic (carbon) LSD is quiet! even in the break-in I was shocked! But I do have a Full FEED exhaust... Just drained the fluid, that shit is BLACK, like black whole black! ANd the diff and fluid was hot as hell, the fluid was like water! After the break-in I let it sit and rolled the car fore/aft a few times for like 30mins just as a safety precaution, never felt a diff that hot before, but I guess after 20mins of figure 8s and a little spirited drive home it will happen....

Yup, you bet. Break in is where you're getting the most friction, the rest of the time you're locked or unlocked for the most part.

Have fun with that new diff :)
