Autometer Speedo

Hi Everyone,

I am currently customising my fd3s dash and replacing all the gauges with autometer cobal items. Now I have an Autometer speedo which is electronic and I know that if I used the original speedo head there is a way I can take the required signal off to the speedo.

The question is which wires do I need to use to get the signal.

Thanks

Dave

I don't know, you welcome, but we can find out in HKS garage :) if you know what I mean. Time to do some work on the car!

I've been thinkin of doin a Autometer full guage replacement for a few years now.

200MPH SPEEDO/10000RPM TACH/ETC.

Good luck, I'm anxious to see how it turns out.

Whoooo......

Of course personal preference is always a factor. However, have you ever actually seen the white LED mod w/your own eyes. I mean up close & in person?
Because, if you have, I find it hard to believe you would prefer the red dude.

Seriously...

That pic w/the Autometer guages is proof positive that someone has done it, but it is not the most attractive setup in my opinion. Nonetheless, I appreciate everyones mods. I say as long as you like it, its good for you.

I'm gonna mod my tach so 7ooorpm is at 12 o'clock. I know normally redline is at 12 o'clock, but there is no need for me to ever go past 7ooorpm w/my setup.

Nice to see some variety w/this thread. Thats what its all about bro's.

Props to Gordon, More ........

Props to Gordon. More than meets the eye in that Autometer guage picture, especially after a second look.

Bet that took alot of work hey Gordon? Had to man. Is that a Pioneer CD changer contoller in the radio spot? Did you paint it?

Are those knobs below from an old Marantz reciever, or some other kind?
Like the Momo wheel, cant go wrong w/Momo in my opinion. Momo hub adapter too I see. Curious, what is that cig. lighter made from? Couldnt figure that one out. Oh yeah, and the seats too, what are those. Looks almost like OEM bottoms w/aftermarket tops? When did you do this & got any more pics of that car?

Dude, the 750 Honda, I remember those. They were bad azz bro. Remember the 500 Interceptor & the 1000cc racer? You must be about my age bro. Do you remember the Honda MB5?

Gettin carried away. Heres some Sat. night tinkerin in the garage pics. Tonight was oil change night for the Mazda 3 & first time R1's been started in at least 4 weeks.

I presume Gordon is referring to the Nexus line of gauges by Autometer. I can attest to their accuracy and precision as well as their strong aesthetic appeal.

They can log anything that they are metering and store the information on an SD card. I compared these logs against those from my Haltech, and they agreed nearly perfectly. The logging capability alone is huge in my book.

Aesthetically, the programmable color schemes and start-up displays are awesome. The programmable "peak" trip points are awesome. The crispness of the sweeping motion is awesome. The icing on the cake for me was the the tach and speedo in the Nexus series are the same size as on the stock FD cluster, making the complete swap doable while maintaining an OEM look.

Awesome gauges. You can take all that with whatever size helping of salt you'd like, as I'm currently selling mine in favor of a more track-oriented Racepak setup. They really are awesome though.

Still on their website.
Click "view demo" near the top when you're actually looking at the gauges.

They're very nice gauges, but my main bitch is the oil pressure gauge only reads to 100 psi... pegs out pretty quick.

limepro 01-25-11 10:33 PM

I know a little off topic, but would it be possible to run the rx-8 tach/mph in the FD? and then replace the FD speedo with a boost/oil gauge? Searched but didn't see anything on it, I loved the speedo in my 8, very easy to read and a little different.

NoPis10 01-25-11 10:36 PM

WOW....
Just saw the demo ....
Those are some sweet gauges.... I may have to change mine out for these...

calculon 01-26-11 08:28 AM

Their in cockpit playback is pretty trick as well. This thread is going to make me talk myself out of selling my setup. Dammit. Quick, someone save me from myself and jump on my shameless plugging.

rx7rcer09... Thank you very much. I tried a couple of new things trying to really cram all the gauges I needed into the space without it seeming like there were too many gauges. (8 gauges: speedo, tach, EGT, water temp, oil temp, fuel pressure, oil temp, and fuel level. Since Autometer is the largest provider of racing gauges in the world, they have every type of gauge (and their better lines are as accurate as any other afaik).

Scathcart... Thanks for the link. The site is so busy. Yeah. That's stil an issue where you need a certain gauge and they don;t have it in the line or series you like. The Nexus speedo is only to 160. I got them to make the first ultralite 200 mph speedo for that car. I might ask them about one for the Nexus line.

I completely hear you on the lack of space for gauges, I ended up just using some spare outputs and using below operating temp/ over temp warning lights for the oil and coolant, and just logging EGT... although the Nexus gauges have both logging and warning light setpoints...

The Nexus gauges match up spot-on against my stand-alone, which is more than accurate enough for me.

The speedo limited to 160 is also a little annoying, but above that, and you really should be completely watching the road :)
