AutoMeter Gauges in Stock Cluster

In response to some recent requests for more info from this old thread

https://www.rx7club.com/interior-exterior-audio-26/autometer-gauges-fd-inst-cluster-199139/page2/

I have created a web page with some pics of the install

Yea I saw those a long time ago Max, damn nice work there. It takes some patience and skill to get those in there right. AutoMeter has some really good gauges.

Bump -
I am still offering custom gauge installs - I am currently out of work due to layoff - not much going in the Land Development business with the Housing market in the toilet :{

Do they have to be autometer gauges or will any 52mm gauge work

JStrib 11-18-08 08:45 PM

That looks awesome. I thought about doing that a while back, but decided to put money elsewhere...

I only have experience w/ AutoMeter - Although I do know VDO and Stewart Warner 52mm Gauges have almost the same form factor so should work the same.

sorry for the delay responding as I got sidetracked by some other contract jobs.

I did this with SPA gauges and if I could pick one of the many things I have done to NOT do, this would be it. It looks great but what a PITA. If Maxpesce can do this for a reasonable price, god bless him. Biggest problem was you could not use the SPA gauge housing so everything had to be rewired. If the AutoMeter fits as is it's 1/3 of the job.

how much depth room is there to make a gauge fit?

Madee 01-08-09 07:05 PM

Very little, and when using the SPA gauges, not only do you have to remove the gauge housing but you have to do some minor trimming of support pieces in the cluster. As I said, an enormous PITA.

There is a write-up, I think it might be Max Cooper's, that I followed for the SPA gauges. The beautiful thing about the SPA gauges is they are each dual purpose.
If I ever have to service them, I may sell the car instead...JK.

what is the deal with the bolts? it looks like your using them to steal power/input from off the board. to make it easier couldnt you just delete using the board and only use the wires? of course you would have to do all guages in order to delete the board. correct? or is there some other use of the board?

i pm'd you

There is not much depth inside the cluster, however there is a lot of room behind it under the dash, so I cut the back of the housing to make the gauges fit:

Ive been wanting to do this, but I want to do all the gauges, speedo an tach. It would look awesome.

Are you planing on adding these as well?

No IMHO it is too much work for little or no benefit. if you want to do it to get white (or other color) faced gauges just replace the faces on the stock units.
