for automatic owner

hi guys

i am currently working on an automatic fd that has some boost problem.

my problem is that i don't know how the car should react since it is an automatic an i am used with my manual.

Do you know if the boost pattern should be the same on an automatic?

i only have 5 psi and doesn't seem to be any transition between the turbos. It always stays between 5 and 6 psi.

what is the best way to test an automatic

thanks a lot

Hi,

Boost test on an automatic should be done as follows:

Find a nice safe straight road

Put tranny in "S" with "Hold" engaged

Floor it

Should see a full 10 psi on the primary turbo around 2800 - 3000 RPM

4500 RPM transition, with a drop to 8 psi, immediately building back up to 10psi until redline (some hold 10psi, some bleed down to 8psi, but shouldnt go lower than 8).

When I slapped a boost gauge on mine for the first time, I was only getting 5psi on the secondary turbo. Ended up being a plugged main Cat.

Hope this helps.

ok thanks a lot, i guess it is just the same thing as a manual.

do you know if a clogged cat can be problematic on both turbos or just the second?

Tough to say what the problem is.... plus Im not an expert on troubleshooting seq. turbos.. But most of the boost problems seem to be centered around the Turbo Control System, or Vacuum system.

Whats the history on the car? How many miles?

Mods? (Downpipe)

Vacuum hose tie wrapped?

If not, and its a 50k+ mile car I would say there's a good chance that the precat, or main cat could be plugged. In which case, that would kill your boost, especially on the 2nd turbo.

in fact, the car is stock but they just changed the engine so it probably is a wrong plugged hose.
