automatic FD?
i heard automatic rx-7's are extremely crappy... however i found a nice, clean one that looks to never have been abused before, and well taken care of. is it still worth a shot or is the automatic rx-7 so crappy that no one should even bother? any input is appreciated. thanks.

search, theirs a thread like this a few threads down. I have an auto, enjoyed it for awhile and now want a 5spd. I dont believe they are crappy at all, but the tranny cant support to much hp and in the end you will you want a 5spd.

Search using "+auto +manual +buying".

Dave...I'm not familiar w/ the + sign usage. Care to share/elaborate? (Maybe even a few advanced search tips :D)

Extremely Crappy??, that's a bunch of crap. I have had one for 8 months and it has been a good car and fun to drive. It does take some getting use to in terms of terms the automatic and the turbos operating together. Between the auto downshifting and the turbos coming on line it can get interesting. And if the auto is in the wrong gear for what you want to do, your not going anywhere fast, and the downshift may not happen as you think. There might be some programs in the ECU that keep power down at times, depending what gear your in, speed, etc. I'm not much into modifying the car since it is stock except for a DP. I would say if you want an automatic car as a priority then the a RX 7 is far superior to other automatics, but not quite as much fun as a manual RX 7. And since they probably haven't been beaten on as much and the price is lower, they are a good deal. Forget the crap talk.

If you put a plus sign in front of a term it then it must be in each result thread, if you put a minus sign the thread must not have that term in it. Plus is the default, so it really didn't matter in this case. I just do it out of habit.
Since the terms auto and manual come up so often, I tossed in buying to narrow down to threads about buying an FD. Another trick is to show results oldest first, since in the case of common subjects, the most recent threads have more "search newbie!" answers than content. Dave |
Dave, thanks a lot. I also know about the * which I use after a few letters to search for partial words (tran* for tranny AND transmission) etc

it's really crappy. you should let someone else buy it.

is their anyway to search for words with 2 or 3 letters? Like I wanted to search for n1 hood, but only hood searches as n1 is to short? Just curious if anyone knew.

Good thing the moderators aren't letting this turn into a search thread.
|
Les, at least it would be a thread that's worthwhile and useful...not something that's been covered 1001 times in the forum ;)
|
I was only kidding, I could read threads about search functions all night long. ;) The auto guys get no respect. I think we are just too laid back, now no comments required. I'll go search the old threads, but if any auto people do have comments, I'd like to hear them also, especially about how they drive and shift. Or what to watch out for.

Do not buy an auto unless you're going LS1.
An auto fd is a turd, in my opinion. Ones the turbos spool it up, it's okay, but it has no lowend power whatsoever. Autos, though, are usually in better shape. If the price is right, go for it. |

Atleast this is true for most search engines. |
Auto isn't bad, it all depends on your goals. If your looking for big power you'd want a stick. However, if your looking for reasonable power auto should do the job. Plus it might be considered "crappy" compared to manuals but its certaintly not crappy agaisnt other cars on the road. Go for it.

Yep if you are going LS1/T56
The auto FD has a 3.90 rear end, stick FD has a 4.10 ratio rear end.
Thus if you are going to do an LS1/T56 conversion you will probably find the 3.90 ratio better choice. You will have to add a clutch pedal which many have done and I hear isn't difficult. |
word... i've had an auto for about a year and a half now, the engine and turbos are still pulling great out of a rolling start above 15+mph, just hit the hold button and shift up, it's actually quite fun, however, i do drive a stick saturn, and it makes me want to get a stick into my auto, don't get me wrong, auto FD's still kick other automatic cars and even stick cars on the freeway, like everyone says, don't get an auto if you want big power, mods are limited for the auto

If you learn to use the hold button right it's works just like a manual without a clutch. If your going to put the usual mods (without going far enough to need a rechipped ECU) then you'll be fine and trans will take the HP you put out. If the car is nice and the price is in your range, don't pass it by just on the merits of it being an Auto. They can still be more than a hand full and like I said the hold button makes all the difference in the world. Jack |
