Automatic engine into a manual ?

I have a spare engine with 30-miles on it and all components (turbos, A/C, alternator, etc.), however, it was setup for an automatic transmission and has been in storage for 3-years (all holes sealed).

What needs to be done to "convert" this engine to manual/stick transmission duty ?

Do I have to get a different rear housing as well as flywheel and starter ?

If so, what is involved in doing this (e.g., new rear gaskets, complete tear-down, etc. ) ?

TIA,
:-) neil

That was an easy search. search terms: 'auto manual conver*' Notice the conver* covers convert and conversion. Another good term would have been swap.

Next time try first.

Nope. I already tried the SEARCH function, and everyone talks about what's needed to swap just the trannies.

I ALREADY have a manual tranny car.

I have a spare engine that was FROM an automatic car.

What do I need to change on the donor engine so it will bolt up to my manual tranny?

After searching the forum, I don't have a clear understanding, except flywheel and starter.

I think that's it, except for modifying the wiring and eliminating some things on the rats nest.

I suggest reading through the parts fiche and FSM in these areas and noting which parts have "AT" and "MT" notes. Those are the ones that are different. Get them at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com

OMFG... SEARCH...

Put two and two together... what do most people have when they are doing the swap.... an auto engine.... what are the main problems when doing an auto -> manual swap.... the wiring harness. you already have the wiring harness from a manual tranny car... wtf do you have a question about?

I know the rear housing is different on the auto from a manual. However the manual transmission will bolt up to it ( minus several bolts ). I believe that is the only major difference. The front counterweight, flywheel are also different. If it were me, I would not disturb the rear housing just to change it over if you have a good engine sitting there.

The rear housing has two different bolts in it. It is significantly different where the starter bolts on, as is the bell housing on the transmission. There is also a flex plate and counterweight that you won't have on the manual car....so I am unsure about any balancing issues. Those are the major changes, of course there are a handful of different electrical connectors and the like, but it shouldn't be too bad.

If all else fails....I'll take that engine off your hands.... :)

OMFG ejmack1. . . READ CLOSELY the question. . .

Looks like badddrx7 and bajaman took the time to READ the clarifications I was looking for.

In short, sounds like to do it right I need to find a rear housing, front balancer, rear flywheel, etc.

In short, sounds like no need to change out the rear cover, unless missing the two bolts is detrimental to structural integrity . . .

All of which information is in at least 5 threads on the first page of a simple search... :bigthumb:

Well, you could have figured that out yourself by looking at the parts list, too, but if you want to wait around for someone to jerk you off, by all means. This info was also in the links in the thread I set you up with.

It won't be me again.
