Auto Transmission help

After installing a rebuilt engine, car is having shifting problem. It seems start in second, will shift to third and won't go into overdrive. Maybe... That's just what it feels like. The car will run 60 MPH @ 3500+ RPM... It just won't shift even if I let off the gas. The hold button won't work either... Any ideas? Anyone experience this problem before? Does engine need a "break in" period in order to get the tranny to shift properly?

Thanks.

The tranny is in safe mode you will have to take it to a transmission shop to shine somemore light on your problem.

Yeah, trans is in limp mode.

I am the one who built the motor. I removed the trans. oil cooler lines running by the starter when pulling the motor. Obviously I lost some ATF when I removed them. After building the motor and reinstalling I topped the fluid off and started the motor. It fired up very easily, but after seeing it run for a few seconds I noticed one of the atf lines was leaking. Somehow a hole was made in the line. I cannot imgine more than a quart to quart in a half spilled on the ground. I immediately shut it off and replaced the line. Refilled the ATF and everything was good except for the symptoms described above.

Also on first start up I missed the connector that runs across the top of the tranny, 3 prong connector. I am wondering if this has anything to do w/ it? I am going to try resetting the ECU via removing the negative batt. terminal and see if it changes anything.

I have built 13bs in the past just never for an auto before. Also I recommed him getting a PFC as that is what I am accustomed to tuning w/. I have been tuning a T67 FD this past week.

Any input is appreciated.

yeah, I'd definately try resetting everything and maybe it will come out of limp mode. if not, maybe there's some sensor or something missed. in which case a code scanner would shed some light on it.

the pfc will not work with the auto do a search on this subject. the hold light will still flash. you need to fix the problem first before adding new things. go to a trans shop before you have major problems and need a new trans.

Check the tps. and i bet when you try to pull it the hold light will start to blink.

The auto trans has a powertrain conrol module and provides codes. You need to start there, if I remember right it mounts behind the ecu. Make sure you have it plugged in. Look at page K-214 of the work shop manual.

The car was running and shifting fine before the rebuild, right? So....something changed and it seems you have a good idea of where to start based on the posts I've read. Should be fairly minor and an easy fix. I would definitely unplug the battery and reset the ECU, making sure all the connectors are hooked up to the tranny. And there are a couple that are a BITCH to get to 'seat' right and fully connect, down along the driver's side towards the back of the tranny. Also make sure the auto tranny temp sender is hooked up at the thermostat housing.

PFC not installed yet. My understanding is that it will work only you loose the hold function. Thanks for the other advice.

Temp sensor is hooked up. I haven't looked at the car since wed. I double check connections as I really feel that is where the problem lies. Manuals are much better to play w/ IMO. Thanks
