Audible airflow through the downpipe at idle?
Hey all,
I started my 7 yesterday to let it run for 20 minutes or so (it's sleeping for the winter but I've been starting it every 2 weeks). When I was about to shut it down, I sat in the car for a couple minutes to just chill (and dream of days to come when the snow melts and I can actually drive her once again!!). Anyway, I noticed a sound that almost sounded like the fan/AC was on. It was sort of a faint but audible whooshing sound, like wind noise. I made sure the fans were off and they were. I stepped on the gas a bit (just a tad, maybe up to 900 RPMs), and the "pitch" of the noise went up slightly. No whine or anything, just the sound of flowing air. I never noticed this the other times I started the car, but I haven't really sat in it when running since my Downpipe install either. Is this noise normal? I suspect it's just the sound of air flowing through the unwrapped downpipe. I just hope it's not an exhaust leak or anything. Outside the car, the only exhaust noise comes from the tailpipe. It's actually kinda cool, almost sounds like I'm sitting in a jet! Is it anything to worry about? Thanks! |
your either hearing the turbos..
or you have an exhaust leak. |
I've been told that a Stainless Steel downpipe will make such noises. I get this wooshing or ticking noise too, and I'm going to wrap my d/p to see if that quiets things down. After I Dynamated my doors, I hear it MUCH louder than before.

Thanks for the replies!
Nah, no need to turn up the stereo. I like the noise! Reminds me of being up front in the ERJ I used to fly! "FD 2-6-9'er, you are cleared for takeoff!" "Roger!" "Huh?" :p: |
