AST replacement with a difference
I have searched and read and decided that I am going to do this mod , but I am st ill uncomfortable with replacing one piece of plastic with another , since the replacement part is also made of plastic . Has anyone tried other means such as ...
1 . Modifying the stock piece by drilling a hole and welding in an aluminum tube / fitting to accept the overflow hose , or 2 . Fitting a whole aluminum piece like the ones sold by JEGS. |
.
Radiator filler necks sold at JEGS

Why dont you buy an aluminum AST from rx7store? I don't get why you would buy another plastic one. They are 150 bucks and its all aluminum.

All the aftermarket ASTs are metal, so I don't understand your concern....

He means AST elimination, whereby you replace the aluminum filler cap stand on the older style water pump housings with a plastic peice from an FC that allows a pressure cap to be used there. You then run the outlet from the plastic replacement to the overflow tank. He wants to use a metal stand replacement instead.
If you have a newer water pump housing, then you don't know what I'm talking about because those are all one peice. To eliminate the AST on those systems, you must drill a hole in between the top of the neck and the land where a pressure cap would seat, then put a nipple into the hole. To answer your question Marcel, I don't think many of us were aware of the metal replacements you show above, and just use the plastic FC part 'cause that's the one we know about ;) Give it a try, and let us know how it works, ok? |
The plastic part from the FC is fine. It is not a reliability liability like the FD's platic AST.
