ast and overflow probs
 

Ok i've just had a new big alloy rad and alloy ast fitted, I'm pretty sure the system is now been burped.
The problem is the water from the rad cap neck is going low but i'm not loosing the water. The water is going into the overflow tank (slowly bit by bit) and not returning to the rad cap neck when cold.

Could this be the AST CAP?

Please help, I have searched but would like your advise guys.

How much coolant/water did you fill into the system? When I replaced my radiator and AST I remember putting several quarts of coolant into both the radiator and the AST. You should just keep topping off the coolant and make sure you are not leaking anywhere. Start the car and let it iddle to let the coolant cycle. After it is safe to remove the radiator cap top it off and continue to do this until the coolant is full. I'm not sure if this will solve your problem, but its just a suggestion. :D

I have Bleed a number of cars and this is a bit odd the coolant level drops to a set point and wont drop any more and it seems to leak the coolant into the overflow.

Its like there is a set level and it drains off anything over it to the overflow trank.

Would the fact he has a Pettit AST with a PFS Ic have anything to do with this as when fixed using the brackets provided it seems to be alot lower? Would it drain of the exess water to the level of the AST cap?

possible to have a leak in vacuum of the coolant system so that coolant goes to the overflow but not enough pressure builds to suck it back.

first things first, replace the caps. Let us know if that fixes it.

Just checking do you have a Spring loaded cap on the engine as well as the AST?

I've got the non spring type cap on the rad and a spring loaded cap on the ast.

Btw. This only happened after the alloy rad and ast tank was fitted. So it cannot be engine related. The engine has 6k since rebuild.

You should replace your caps with both spring loaded caps. I think the 16 lbs caps are okay from Pep Boys. That's what they carry for our FD's. I know mazda recommended 13 lbs after the recall. But i have the 16 lb and it runs fine. Yes, it still does make the gurgling noise. I heard that was normal after the recall due to heatsoak (sorry ass stock radiator). But like every one said change your caps then burp the system until it levels off. It could take a Couple of days to do it. Good luck!
