Apexi PFC and Pettit Racing

I am seeing post of the base maps not being really safe and people recommending to have it dyno tuned. Pettit is close to me, can they tune the PFC correctly. Current mods are DP, pettit cat back, stock cat, pettit intake, and power pullies. I am looking to purchase the pfc within the next month. I would like to have steve at gotham tune it, but this would be for a temporary solution until that is possible. Any advice would be great.

Mahjik 02-04-04 09:01 PM

My advice: if you want to know if Pettit can tune it, call them and ask them.

In the least, you can always load someone's map that has similar mods to yours. Not a great idea (as the map could be crap to begin with), but it's a possibility.

uhhh, with those mods the base map on the PFC will be a dandy temporary solution without anyone tuning it. Or you could have it tuned twice but what a waste of dough

wolf7676 02-04-04 09:21 PM

Thanks for the heads up, I just hear all these horror stories about the base maps and how it should be tuned on a dyno to each specific car. 83,000 original miles and just want to keep her going :)

The base map is leaner than the stock ECU, so why would he be safe?

With a programable ECU, you are never safe unless you are running some sort of programmed map. The base maps shipped with those ECU's are just to get the car started so it can be tuned. They aren't designed to be running around the street on them.

Has anyone heard of a shop down here in Houston called SGP Racing? Thats the closest shop for me and i just wanted to know if anyone had some opinions about them as tuners...

Get the PFC

steve is coming to AL in march

When I was down at Pettit, they didn't want anything to do with the PFC (the vibe they put off...and it was pretty clear). They called it the "Apex'i Thingy." Mostly in part that they have their own computer that is an indirect competitor to the Power FC.

They told me that a guy was in there for a good while on their dyno trying to tune the Power FC with a single turbo and all the other bolt on's and couldn't make hardly any power (just because he wasn't tuning right), where as their Unlimited ECU made more power with less bolt on's and twin turbo's. Basically what I am trying to say is...they probably don't have a clue how to tune a Power FC.

They told me that the Power FC was unnecessary when I said that it was going to go in the car. I didn't listen to their advice and got one anyways. Turns out, I should have listened to them

Everything you say is the feeling I got the last time I was at Pettit. It would seem only right for them to push their ecu over the pfc. They claimed they installed it on 5 re-builds and 2 of the five came back after 5k miles for a rebuild and the engine looked as if it had 30k miles on it. Something with the apexi pfc not providing as much oil thru thr omp as the stock ecu. Obviously premix could fix that, but I think it all has to do with the tunning. Maybe they just are not the best people to turn to for this item. I guess what I am trying to figure out is how many out there have had pettit tune their pfc with great results?

ghostrx7 02-05-04 05:38 AM

Well they were prolly saying that because they sell protek R which is basically overpriced 2 stroke oil. Premix is only good for killing mosquitos (people that use it know what i mean:), and peace of mind.

wolf7676 02-05-04 05:54 AM

ghostrx7, you are down my way, where did you have your pfc tuned?

BoostCrzy 02-05-04 09:58 AM

lol...hes running a "borrowed" map that we tweaked....and yea...protek is a joke....premix is for those without omp....dont believe the hype.

BoostCrzy 02-05-04 10:01 AM

the only premix i ever ran was lucas injector cleaner oil.....but i stopped after installing my reman....i kinda lost faith in premixing after destroying my first motor...i belive the added oil in the mix causes a low octane condition, and we all know the rest of the story.....PING!

FD_Newb_1974 02-05-04 10:21 AM

Mitch Baywatch,

Why dont' you grab your FD, drive to ATL...we will roll over to AL for Steve's duning on the dyno there. Come back to ATL and you can hit the road down to FL. Certainly your FD isn't afraid of some highway miles?

I'll even provide covered secure parking, walking distance to the cheetah.

Don't be Skeered.

rx7tt95 02-05-04 01:37 PM

Pettit has no idea how to tune the PFC and they do not have a Datalogit which is necessary to change many of the parameters within the Power FC. Go elsewhere for tuning and get a Datalogit to go with your PFC.

PhatManBUD 02-05-04 02:41 PM

rotary reliability and racing one of the guys said it was ok for me to run stock with the power fc on? with no boltons other then catback

PhatManBUD 02-05-04 02:42 PM

is it a skeem to get me to blow my motor so i will take it back to them?

Actually I run premix ONLY, 16oz per tank and personally I have no idea what your talking about. What did you do pour motor oil into your fuel?

A good 2 stroke synthetic does not cause smoke problems, especially if you only use 4oz along with oil metering like most people do

Premix wasnt your problem.

A tank of gas is OVER 2300 oz. You seriously think adding 4-16oz of premix thats designed to be mixed with fuel cause octane rating issues enough to blow your engine? Even if you ran 16oz like me thats only .0069 of a tank of gas.

BTW - What I'm saying is a good PREMIX of 2 stroke synthetic like Mobil or Amsoil is good for your engine and wont hurt your octane rating. However, you were using injector cleaner....there is no telling what that was doing to your engine. Its a cleaner not a lubercant, it was probably cleaning all the oil off your housings and seals

As for Pettit, I wouldnt take your PFC to them for tuning. Look up Chris Anderson, his name on the forum is Crispeed. He's a awsome tuner and knows how to use the PFC. He's also in South FL

Sesshoumaru 02-05-04 03:26 PM

premix is fine. Even when i accidently put 2x amount i should of- it drove fine.

Oil on the other had is bad news.

It will smoke like crazy, foul plugs, and plug your fuel filter up given you your ping.

It's just a pain in the ass in the winter time to do.

ghostrx7 02-05-04 05:43 PM

Spo, my friend ran premix(protekR) in his car, at the recommended amount every fill-up, and he would smoke out a whole neighborhood 10 minutes after turning his car on. Boostcry can comment on toms car as well:)and wolf im running a base map which isnt very good since i get breakup and run REALLY rich at high rpm on anything over 11-12 psi. Its ok if you run 10psi or so on a basemap but nothing ridiculous.

ghostrx7 02-05-04 05:52 PM

*steals boostcrzy's wideband*., now I just need a datalogit..!! where does crispeed live? anywhere near west palm beach?

blackr17 02-05-04 06:30 PM

I just ordered a pfc from rx7 store, and I asked them about getting it tuned at pettit, and they said that they don't have that much experience with it. He recommended ASI Racing.
