APEXI BOV loudness Adjustments?

hey guys...i know that you can adjust the sound on the apexi twin chamber bov by turning the red color at the base of the bov.....this maybe be a stupid question, but which hole do i put it at to make it loudest sound? large, medium or small hole?

Mahjik 09-19-03 10:42 AM

Bigger hole, bigger sound.

93 R1 09-19-03 12:02 PM

shouldn't it be the opposite. Small hole is louder?

RotaryMaybe 09-19-03 12:16 PM

so which one is it guys..small or loud? makes sense if it was small cuz it will bring a louder pitch? ill try changing to diff holes but i'd like to know for sure....thanks guys

How much noise can you make through a drink stirring straw verses a normal straw?

DaleClark 09-19-03 01:40 PM

Small hole is louder. Had the BOV, been there, done that :).

Wow, another noise thread. Shouldnt the bigger hole should be used do the boost spike(surge) is quickly eliminated?

I did quite a few runs testing it when I got it years ago and the larger hole made a louder sound to me (and my buddy riding in the car). I also did some idle rev testing and the larger hole provided more sound (granted, you only get about 4 PSI at idle verse the normal 10+ PSI under driving load).

im gonna go ahead and take Mahjik's advice...he seems to be thwe only one making a a valid point....ill set it at the bigger hole and go from there...thank Mahjik....also, Mahjik, was there a big diff?? im getting my car back this weekend so i can test it then....just curious

There didn't seem to be a big difference with the hood open when I was idle rev testing, but with hood closed and on the road it seemed to make a big difference in the BOV hole settings.

I would say test the different settings and see what you like. Good luck.

Jesus, You could have figured it out yourself in the time it took to post and respond to this thread.

Here is an easy way to find out.

1) get in your car and drive it. Listen to the BOV between shifts.

2) Pull over. Open the hood. Turn the little red collor to a different set of holes. NOTE: Make a mental note of wich holes you started with.

3) Repeat step 1

4) repeat step 2

5) decide wich one is loudest and put it on that whole.

You may want to write this list down for reference while performing this test.

stinkfist...i know i could easily do that but mu car is in the shop and im gonna get it back this weekend....i just posted the thread for the sake of curiosity....but that's for the info..thanks

I just got this valve and have it hooked up, but I'm not hearing it working and I'm a little worried. Can you post exactly how you have it hooked up? It seems fairly straightforward, but I have the vacuum side into a T with other stuff I fear may be screwing it up.

Mahjik 11-30-03 09:02 PM

There isn't much to it. You connect the line off the Y-Pipe to the BOV, and run a vacuum line from the UIM to the back of the BOV.

You should be able to rev the car in neutral and hear the BOV (you can get about 4 PSI without any load on the car).

At what point does the stock blow off valve become insufficient? Don't you need to have A LOT of horsepower to need an aftermarket one? Thats what I was told by the folks at M2 anyway. Enlighten me!

RX7SpiritR 11-30-03 09:42 PM

Why did you have to ask then?! Why didn't you do the testing yourself to find out what YOU think? It would have saved a lot of time and wouldn't have wasted server space. :D

Do all BOVs need to be welded to piping?
Or is there one that will attach easily to a Stock IC FD?

You don't "need" an aftermarket BOV. You don't "need" to run more boost on these cars. You don't "need" to add bodykits to these cars. People change the BOV because they want to just like anything else on the car.

The BOV either needs to be attached to some hard piping or have a flange so it can get the air from the IC piping somehow. That doesn't mean it needs to be mounted on an IC pipe, but you have to get the air from it somehow. Most of the BOV's have a "kit" which will include a flange so it does not need to be welded to a pipe.

Damn I don't NEED a body kit? I had better return my Super Tsunami Combat Samauri kit then.
Could someone just answer my question instead of trying to make me feel dumb? At what point does the stock BOV become insufficient? Thanks.

I ran around 350 rwhp or so on my stock twins non-seq at 15 psi with the stock BOV and it ran fine. I had it vented for a louder sound. Some guys have run close to 400 rwhp on the stock BOV with no problems - I would say anything over 350 rwhp and you should get something better. The Apexi BOV is cheapest and probably the quietest BOV out there. Not much louder than my stock vented BOV. i bleieve the largest hole was the loudest for with the Apexi unit but it wasn't THAT much difference.

RX7SpiritR 12-01-03 12:08 AM

do a search and find out what psi the stock BOV can handle. Then you'll get your answer.

Thank you! Now if only everyone could be nice and helpful.

felix_is_alive 12-01-03 07:44 AM
