Is anyone using the bigger (mx-6?) mazda oil filter?
 

Bought one at the dealership along with a few of our puny fd oil filters. It's the same diameter (looks like it'll fit) but is about 50% taller (meaning more filtration, no?).

With my luck it'll obstruct oil flow and cause my motor to blow all 17 apex seals :D

Anyone use these mofo's?

I use the 2nd gen rx-7 oil filter. About twice the size as stock.

I use that larger filter part# G6Y0-14-302A.
It is also used by Tri-Point, which is how I found out about it.

using a bigger filter you would think would increase filtration, but the differences are major, the difference between the two are pressure differences, trust me, if you put a filter on with greater pressure capabilities(hence larger) you can possibly loose oil pressure through the filter(too little pressure for size), the exact opposite with a smaller filter (too much pressure for the filter), and trust me i have seen the results, the filters can blow off because of the pressure differences

That's the one. If tri-point uses it, it's good enough for me.

If you have the GREDDY oil filter adapter(so that you can monitor oil pressure/oil temperature), you HAVE to use the smaller FD oil filter....sucks to be me...;)

Lunar: Tri-Point showed me the same thing and I've been using the bigger filters for 4 or 5 years.

Robster: Are you trying to say that the big ones are worse or the small ones are worse?

I use PureOne. It makes a replacement of the MX6's filter. Comparing that to OEM FD's, I think they are similar. No change in oil pressure or change in oil color. BTW, the MX6 filter fits fine in stock location. It's pretty amazing how much oil these little filters hold.

yeah purolator Pure One # PL14620 is what I use; The MX-6 size. JspecRacer 7, your Car almost look slike an F-50 in your aviatr, have any other pics of it?

Insted of the MX6 filter use the early T-II filter - Larger Diameter than the FD one but has similar bypass specs. - I think the bypass on the MX-6 filter will prob be less as most piston engines run less oil pressure than rotaries - the Mazda OEM filters for the rotaries have the bypass set up at 120psi, (I think Pureolators rotary filters are set at 120psi also) I think most the piston filters are set at 80-90psi. I beleive that Purolator is now making the OEM, MAZDA labeled filters for Mazda.

Has anyone else used the K&N Gold oil filter? I've been using it for about a year now, with no noticeable difference in oil pressure or color at changes. Just wondering if anyone else is using it, since I didn't see it mentioned above. It's a good bit larger than the stock filter.

Bosch filters seem to be pretty good too. I'm no Dr. Science or anything, but my oil isn't black when it comes out after ~3k, so who knows.

mazda usa has consolidated their oil filters. they used to have about 4-5 of them (not counting the fords) and now they have 2. mazdausa also switched suppliers from mazda japan to some cheap us brand (i think tennax? sp?). so at this point in time there are only 2 filters the tall one (g6yo) and the short one (b6y2), they seem to be identical except for the height. the mazda japan filters were different internally between the short and tall. they were able to cram more filter in the smaller can.

those who said they dont see the oil pressure diffrences, aer u telling this from your stock oil pressure gauge? cause if u are then your observations are useless, that gauge is a piece of shit and i woudl have to agree with robster here on this one size will cahnge your pressure eventhough your stock gauge will tell u everythign is fine

I use FRAM oilfilter for the RX7.

We all know how important oil changes are for
our FD3S. I righteously change my Oil every 2-3K
miles w/ filter sometimes before for the hell of it...

With regular oil changes and etc..
Would it even matter what oil filter you use???
Does the special oil filter and etc justify
the price when we are changing oil so ofteN?

I had the same thought on Airintakes also.
Because I have a HKS superflow, and people
talk about how they FLOW good and etc.
but doesn't clean the air as much others..
But when we change our oil before they get dirty
does it matter??? As long as as it filteres enough
to keep the large objects out that can hurt our turbos.
I am sure those microscopic dust particles can't hurt to bad.. especially when you are changing oil before
it even gets dirty...

BTW the oil filter I use from Fram cost about 5 bucks..
How much are the special ones you otheres use cost?

the microfiber is what stops those tyni particles and for high revving things such as a rotary and especially turbos that matters VERY much, i dont see anyone performing any tests with all the oil filters i woudl like ot see and none on teh rx7 so i say get a stock filter and if u are anal replace it more often, why go with a cheaper brand when u are replacing the filter so often anyway i am sure its not the money factor?

noooooo....i dont use mobil 1 oil with my filter...i use cheap either CASTROL GTX or VALVOLINE all weather or something.....20W50?:D :confused:

FRAM filters (and all the ALLIED SIGNAL brands) are the worst oil filters on the market - Purolator's standard line is cheaper and superior quality, and their PURE-1 Line is only a little more with FAR superior Quality (Better, IMHO Than OEM) My Mazda dealer was selling me the OEM fd filter for $4.99, I get the PURE-1 filter from Pep Boys for around $6.50, the std Purolator (which is also Pep Boys PROLINE Filter) sells for around $4.50

Thats what I have been using..... Exept the ghetto pepboys around here ran out of them and are not restocking. They dont even have the normal filter for our cars. The only thing I could find around town was a shitty fram. :(

the little particles will eventually turn your turbine blades from straight to round, the air filteration does matter

I've been using the PureOne 14620 and have been doing so since I purchased the car. No diff in oil pressures and no signs of trouble in 1.5 yrs of usage. I Still change the oil every 2-3k as the biggest concern is fuel contamination which a larger filter doesn't solve. None the less, it's a bit more piece of mind :-)
