anyone take out their instrument cluster???
 

I took my instrument cluster, worked on the car and 2 weeks later put it back in. The question I wanted to know was, does it matter which way the harness is plugged in? I had mine out for so long, I forgot which way they plugged in....on top of that, I need to know if there is a way to calibrate the gauges?? My oil gauge is off, everything else could be too, but I can't start the car just yet


Any suggestions??

How'd you get it out, I gave up half way through and put it back together, although I was rushed for time.

Is there more than one way to plug it in? It seems highly likely that it won't work correctly if it is not plugged in correctly.

Did you move the needles around (remove them, or just twist them around)? If not, I don't see why you would have to make any adjustments. Maybe the reading is wrong because the harness was connected improperly?

I have a spare oil pressure gauge if you find that yours is hosed (though I doubt it is). Here's why:

I'm pretty sure that the connectors are all keyed so that they only go together correctly. At least all the main connections are this way.

There are 2 connectors that have 6 pins (1 side) 6 pins the other....they are shaped the same on both sides, so you could potentially flip it around the wrong side

I took the needle out because I didn't like the red, I sanded down the red and will be changing the bulbs out. When I put the keys in yesterday, and click to Ign II, the oil needle shot up to above the halfway point, I am wondering if I need to start the car up...not sure :confused:

Not too difficult, although funny how it's so tricky. You need to take off the driver side vent piece that feeds the air into the door vent. There's a screw inside there. Then, pop the sterring column plastic off along with the plastic piece below the sterring wheel. There are, I think 4 screws in there. Here's the the thing most people forget. Drop the steering column. There's only two bolts that holds it up to the dash. The cluster should be free now. Grab a 90 degree flat-head, with a rag or something, pop in behind the WHOLE cluster pod, and pull the cluster straight out towards the wheel. Don't lift up, just straight out.

You probably flipped one of the warning light connectors with the one that controls the oil pressure gauge, coolant temp, etc. (although I recall that the positioning of the connectors-- a few large connectors fed to the middle, and some smaller ones to the right--made it pretty difficult to get them mixed up. I guess it's possible, though). That's why your oil pressure gauge suddenly rises when you turn on the key-- your warning lights are supposed to come on at that time.
