anyone put a sti engine into a fd?
 

anyone done that? i'm just vaguely trying to get an idea for this. 300bhp into a fd. sounds nice don't it? especially with that f4, it'll be low to the ground giving it better center of gravity and im wondering if this takes lots of custom work and if anyone has ever done it. or if anyone can chime in a 250+hp engine put into a fd that's not v8. thank you.

i just love the looks of the fd, not the engine.

The engine it comes with is 250+ HP out the gate. With some minor modifications 300ish is easily attainable.

Your post makes it sound like you think that putting a 250-300hp motor in the car would be a big upgrade?

Im pretty sure it would be too wide to fit.

Also, a 250whp FD can be relaible.

i just wouldnt want to live with a rotary engine. cause everybody says how after 80,000 it just becomes useless. any other popular 6cylinder engine that is put into the rx-7 with lots of write ups?

the only time a rotary becomes useless is when it blows up, which can be around 80k, but some have gone 140k. Depends how you drive it.

Think about it this way, if you do 80,000 miles a year (which you dont) that means you could blow your engine once a year. Keep the car 5 years, and it will cost you about $15,000 US to keep replacing the engine.

To put an STi engine in, and do it yourself will probably cost around that, allowing about 3k for the engine, custom gearbox and prop shaft (if you are using RWD still) or a hulluva lot more for a 4wd setup. Then youll need extra fuelling arrangements, intercooler mountings, motor mounts, bla bla bla.

It's alot of work, a helluva lot of work, and the price really doesnt warrant doing it if you just doing it for reliability. You can get more power out of a rotary more cheaply than an STi engine anyway. The only good thing about it is reliability as i say, and unless your daily driving the car 220 miles a day, EVERY day, your going to see no beneift.

However, if your rich, bored, a showboat, or just plain stupid about cars, please do the conversion id love to see it :P

It crossed my mind about a built boxer 2.0L WRX engine in a 7, but then again i have a reliable rotary =p. maybe when it blows a second time (plan on rebuilding once)

at that time i should have some money for a cool project...and the boxer engine should be lower in price ;)

STI motor? What a waste.

Local shop near me is putting a 2JZ-GTE in an FD, just like the one pictured at the top. THAT would be baddass, but even still, you mess up the weight distribution and basically lose the "R" in "RX-7"...

But hey...I'd drive it...I just wouldn't do it.

My opinion:

3-rotor > 2JZ-GTE

ive never heard of the swap but it would be interesting if not a novelty i suppose. the sti motor is significantly lighter at a whooping 250ish lbs. (longblock) it would be a headache, more like a migraine but anything is possible.
