Anyone have the OEM license plate mount?

i just got mine recently and it was factory sealed but i noticed it didn't have anything to mount the plate to the actual mount so its jerryrigged with zipties for now, kind of shitty for an 80 dollar license plate mount. what are you guys using? im going to the hardware store sometime soon to find some properly fitting bolts and nuts...the thing is if if the nut comes off loose on a high speed highway run or something it will wreck my paint...

Narfle 03-28-06 08:20 PM

lock tite baby!

StealthFox 03-28-06 08:24 PM

yeah for sure i forgot about that, that stuff kicks ass.

jic 03-28-06 08:33 PM

i didnt even know there was a such thing for the usdm bumpers till now lol

alexdimen 03-28-06 08:45 PM

put some foam tape on the back of it where it may contact the bumper and you'll be straight. the one on my project car messed up a small bit of paint on my bumper.... needless to say it's not going back on and i'm gonna give one of those clay bars a try on it.

theres like additional plastic ends that attach to the bracket. its been awhile since i even looked at it...let me dig it up and get back to you(i no longer use it)

pugg57 03-29-06 06:29 AM

personally, i just spend the money and got a new OEM plate holder. sure, it was overpriced for what it is, but it was a quick solution to an annoying little problem. just fyi, i don't remember it being $80... did you talk to Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda for a price?

sevensix 03-29-06 11:46 AM

just need a few nuts and bolts... get zinc ones so they don't rust... :naughty:

FDNena 03-29-06 11:52 AM

wow I didn't even realize they were that pricey for the OEM plate holder. I just spent 9 bucks at Home Depot and made my own so I could pass my inspection and then off it came until inspection time later this summer. But I can actually drive around perfectly fine with it all the time if I want.

Do you have a picture of it? I am curious to see what it looks like.

Anybody have pics of this on their USDM front bumper FD? I would like to see it. I want to either put this on or just use some simple brackets/fasteners to hold it on. Want to make sure it's not blocking the rad opening too much.

mdpalmer 08-11-09 03:44 PM

pics of this thing anyone?

No, much like Nessie, Sasquatch, and aliens in cornfields....no pictures of this elusive object seem to exist.

Supernaut 08-11-09 06:47 PM

Weird. I got my OEM holder for cheap. Ask Fritz.

Here is a picture of my silver 7 with 90 degree corner braces you can find in any hardware store and then to the right is my dad's 7 with the Mazda plate holder. The Mazda holder will definitely keep the plate up and out of the way for proper cooling. The corner braces on the silver 7 work, but does restrict the airflow somewhat.

I'll try to get a picture of the OEM holder up close sometime so you have a better idea.

I will take pictures on Sunday of my recently purchased, overpriced OEM license plate bracket. It does have some flex to it, but the license plate/screws do not scrape up my bumper while driving. Also, my Dad and I didn't use the crappy screws that came with it (parts.com). One of the openings had to be drilled out a bit more to accommodate the passenger side screw that was used. We also put a small piece of rubber between the bracket and bumper (underside) so it does not scratch the paint. The plate holder does block a little airflow to the radiator, but it's a tradeoff since NY requires the front plate.

Nice garage...love the stone. It LOOKS like you have a bathroom in there....?

Supernaut 08-12-09 10:51 PM

UGH guys I dont understand why you call the OEM holder over priced. You can get them pretty damn cheap from someone on the forums. I'll be selling mine very soon actually.

Hitokiri_Gensai 08-12-09 10:58 PM

i had an L bracket set up for my FD, it bolted up under the bumper and kept the plate out of the way of the air path. It all bolted up nicely, although i have no idea where it came from, it was bought by the PO.
