Anyone that has changed out their key set w/ ignition...

Well I have run into a problem I cannot seem to figure out without some guidance.
I have searched and I have looked all over the FSM.
Can someone tell me what this is??
I am thinking it has something to do with my car being an auto and maybe the other ignition unit is for a 5speed?
Thing is, the gold box can be removed but not the plate under it. Its almost just pressed in or something.
Can someone let me know if its needed or what can I do to get this working right.
Thanks.
Here are some pics.
Green is the OEM piece I am replacing and the Red is the piece I bought and am putting in.

hmmmm

I am not shure but it seems that the gold box is sometype of locking solenoid so you cant turn the ignition when it is activated Maybe it has to do with the anti theaft but the pin doesnt seem to be to thick to stop someone from turning the ignition (thin). Or maybe like you said it has to do with the auto tranny it might disable the ignition if the car is not in park or neutral so you cant start it in gear or if you overide the parking mechanism so you can roll the car it might disable it again i am not shure.

I would guess it's a lockout to disable the ignition when it is in gear, which would explain why a MT ignition cylinder wouldn't have it. Crack open the FSM, I'm sure it talks about it in there somewhere.

I will check the FSM again, I am going to check all th wiring diagrams about the ignition to see what I can find. Thanks for some input.

Key interlock solenoid...check pg z-78 in wiring fsm!

well I just noticed that the face where the key goes in has different wording... the piece I am taking out doesn't have "Push" while the piece I am trying to put in does.
I can't seem to be able to take off the plate behind the gold solenoid.
Guess I will be needing an automatic ignition key set??
I am going to find a way to fool the ecu in thinking that the car is park or something.
I will see what I can do.

Alright, I just tried something and I have thought about putting in the manual ignition assembly and trying it out with the solenoid attached.
The reason is because when I put in the key to the manual assembly, when you want to get the key out you have to push the key in and twist to off and pull out.
Now on the automatic assembly, all you do is twist the key to off and pull out.
What I did was push in the gold cylinder, in the plate under the gold solenoid, in with a pick and tried to get the key out, it would not let me.
I looked under the gold solenoid and it has a nub that sticks out... what the ecu must do is send current to the solenoid when the car is not in park and the nub pushes down the gold cylinder, not letting you take out your key while you are not in park.
So if I remove the solenoid in whole, then I should not have any problems?
Or will the ecu go looking for the solenoid and not let the car start because its missing?
I am trying to figure out how I can bypass the solenoid signal into fooling the ecu into thinking it is there... I am going to check the auto to manual conversion topics and see what they do about the wiring.
I will see what I can come up with and let you guys know. :)
I will try to post pics so it can be easier to understand.

i went through everything I could find and its not the key interlock solenoid... but in the end it didn't matter.
I put the manual piece without the sensor and wires and the car has started just fine and the key has no problem releasing, even if its not on park.
so no problems so far, I will keep this updated if anything else happens or comes up.
