Anyone ever trailer a fd?
 

Looking to pick up a car out of state. I am thinking trailering it is plan A. Anyone ever try this? I am thinking about a uhal trailer. Are there other options? I guess I will need to add some wood to extend the ramps. But even then it's questionable. Any thoughts? I just started evaluating this option.

No need for ramps unless it's a very low car.
Stock ride height is no problem for the uhaul car trailer.
Do not rent the two wheel dolly.

The U-Haul trailers are pretty small.. It should fit the FD, but you'll likely need to load it backwards to help with the tongue weight.

I trailered my FD yeeeeeears ago from Michigan, ironically enough, to KD Rotary for a new wiring harness (don't ask). I used a UHaul trailer and it fit no problem - and was even lowered a bit - no issues.

Granted my car is both lowered and has a lowered '99 lip, but I use UHaul trailers frequently and the ramps are one thing, but the tire stops are another. I make sure they give me the 7500# (mostly silver) trailer instead of the 5000# (mostly orange) trailer, and then I remove the tire stops at the front of the trailer (four bolts). My car barely fits over the strap tighteners. Also, with 285 wide tires, the supplied straps don't work well and can slip off one side or the other—I strap it down with my own ratchet straps for safety.

I've used uhaul twice for my FD. No problems really. The second time my car was lowered so I took off the 99 lip so it didn't scrape.

I've trailered mine as well. Driving the rear wheels of the tow vehicle up on some 2x's, and / or jacking up the trailer a little bit with the tongue jack can get a better approach angle.

I remember one trailer I rented has some nice straps that went over the wheels to hold the car in place. Can't remember if that was U-haul or not. Not a hard car to trailer.

The title of this thread literally made me lol. Most FD owners have trailered their car at one time or another. The u-haul trailers are a great option as they are all aluminum and keep the weight down. Not the most advanced brakes but I've towed these cars all across the country. Don't drive like an idiot and it's a breeze.

We had to remove the front bumper to get this one on. With 285 rears it barely fit the width of the trailer rails. Also the front bumper hung over the front.

Whoa. The front bumber or the front lip?That stinks. I guess thats the big orange one. I think someone suggested the mostly silver as a better fit.

Some of u mentioned tire size possibly being an issue. The car has 255 35-18 in front and 275-35-18 in rear. Anyone think this could be a pain?

So right now my plan of attack is to back the car o to better distribute the weight. Car is lowered and has the 99 spec from lip. As per advice in this thread I could use the hitch jack to create a better angle and I plan to bring some lumber just in case. I may take off the lip too. I will also book the smaller silver trailer as oppose to the more orange version.

Per my post, DON'T use the straps that come with it that go over the tires. They are meant for narrower tires so that they can fall on either side and cradle it. 255 might be OK, but the 285 was such that it couldn't wrap around both sides at a time.I won't even share the story about how I know. Go to Advanced auto, but some ratchet straps, and do it right.

as it stands right now i have an orange 6000lbs booked. I am trying my best to get the bigger one but those are considered to be travel trailers and as such their inventory is constantly moving. I was instructed to call later in week to locate one.

I bought my car in ND and used a uhaul trailer to pull it to WI. You DO NOT need to load it backwards. I bought 2x6s and put them in the wheel area to lift the car up as mine has a 99 front end and was low. The only other thing you need a a driveway to load it on so the ramps are at less of and angle. I can send pictures if you really need it.

Also do not put the rear safety chain in the suspension, just the rear sub frame.

Well f it. I didn't trailer. I drove it home with out issue from Va to CT. Now the fun begins.

Take things slow. Ask a friend who has done it plenty with ANY car to swing by; lure him with beers.

Once youre at the track or your destination, kindly ask someone to help unload or seek advice. We're all car nuts and wont mind offering assistance and advice. I might not have faith in people as a whole, but I believe in the kindness of car nuts like us.

Take some time out to practice it yourself before the day of the transport. Practice will make perfect. I drive my car onto trailer and transport it around alone. Took a couple years do it alone though. So practice!

the best thing to do is dip the wheels in the lowest part and try to put the ramps as high as possible. What I like to do is back the trailer to the driveway and put the rear wheels at the end of the driveway where the water would flow into the sewer.. you will be good with a uhaul trailer
