Anyone Change Their Trans/Diff Fluid Lately?

I'm putting redline is the trans and diff this weekend...couple of questions...

1) there are reportedly three bolts on the trans used to drain and fill the oil....one drain plug, one fill plug, and one torx head bolt that is there for high level inspection?? what size are the bolts? are they all on the right side (passenger side) of the trans housing? the trans takes 2.5 quarts, right? or is it 2.5 liters?

2) how much oil does the diff take?

3) what did you use to get the new oil into the trans and diff?

mucho gracious

Check out this site....it should give you all the information you need. http://www.rx7turboturbo.com/robrobinette/

I'm pretty sure there are two drain plugs and one fill plug. They are actually on the driver side (left side) of the transmission. It took me about 15 min to do....very simple. I borrowed this thing from a friend that had a hose you put down into bottle of oil and the other end you just put directly into your fill hole in the tranny. It also had a handle and all you did was pump and the contents of whatever you are using goes on up inside. I bought 3 quarts of tranny fluid just to be on the safe side. Just keep putting it in until it starts to flow back out :) Good luck

Oh yeah? You should look more closely (of course, the site could be laid out a little better).

Not a whole lot there, but it might come in handy. I made a royal mess the first time I attempted it.

The little owner's manual has the drain\fill locations and quantities. 2 drain and 1 fill (trans). Diff 1 drain, 1 fill. Used a PepBoys pump. I think the diff is just over 1 quart.

I just changed the fluids a few weeks back with Royal Purple...the only problem I had was the big drain plug on the tranny...it's quite large and has to be unscrewed/screwed with a socket wrench because it's surrounded so that you can't use a wrench...

Good luck!

I think the bottom drain plug for the tranny is a 24mm if I'm not mistaken (I'll check when I get home if I get a chance). I just use the nontorx fill plug (requires a crescent wrench to open).

The diff drain plug and fill plug are also 20ish mm sized sockets (sorry I don't remember exactly).
One gallon of shockproof is enough to do one tranny (2.6 quarts) and one diff (1.4 quarts).

All these numbers are off the top of my head so you might want to check the numbers in the manual.

Oh crap...wait I have the service manual in my backpack... hold on.

The manual transmission holds 2.5 L (2.6 US qts).
The differential holds 1.30 L (1.38 US qts).

Hope this helps -- Tommy

the fill/drain holes are on the drivers side. and you have to remove a little transmission splash plate to get to them. You will need a fluid pump of some sort to get the stuff in there.

thanks for all the input, guys, this should make my life alot easier....I always took it to the quick oil change joint before, but those places kind of scare me for a job like this, so I thought I better do it myself

This should help.
