Anybody with a custom cold box for Apexi intake?

Hi!
Just asking myself if maybe this has already been done. I'm installing my apexi power intake, but I want it to be a real "cold" intake. I don't want my intake breathing hot air from the IC or the engine bay... So I'm thinking about going on making a custom fiber box for the intake, totally closed and air ducted.
Has someone already done this thing? I'm curious about it...

I would think that'd be one of the tougher intakes to build such a thing for, since it angles the filter off as it does.

Why not just buy a CAI then?

rynberg 06-14-07 11:01 AM

^^^ exactly, you should have just bought a CAI then. I'm with Ptrhahn, I don't think it would be possible with the Apexi.

I agree with you. The filters are huge, that's right, but I think it can be done. It would be like the pettit intake with the heat shield, but that heat shield would cover the filters for all sides, and the air would be ducted inside with a custom duct.
Anyway, I think it's not a bad thing to do. IF the work is fine and good-looking, it would be like a CAI but with with the apexi on it instead of the K&N, for example... and a heat shield is always a good thing for the intake, isn't it? Don't you think that these kind of filters without any kind of isolation can be even dangerous?? They are always sucking in hot air, and sometimes really really hot.

And about the Cai's in the market... I only know the ARC one, the SRMotorSports one and the KnightSports one. Do you know about others?

I'll give my opinion and then leave it up to you to decide:

Do you think companies would be selling open air filters if they were "dangerous"? While cooler air is good, having a proper intercooler is a better investment, time and money wise.

Personally, I have yet to see hard evidence of CIA's lowering the charge temp that much. i.e. it may be lower at the point before the turbos, but I'll bet you don't have the same saving after the stock turbos. I would bet the difference is negligible at that point, then you have to deal with how effective the IC is...

I think the rule of thumb is, cold air is good, but more air is better... in otherwords, you want cold air up to the point where you have to restrict the intake tract to get it.

However, there IS evidence that a CAI lowers intake temps. Where? Take a drive on a cold day. Are your AIT's colder than they were on a hot day? If so, that's an undeniable indicator that the colder the air is going in to the turbo, the colder it'll be coming out.

Yes, some of it is accounted for by colder air blowing on the IC, and even the "coldest" cold air intake won't match the temp differential between summer and winter, but what you put in DOES affect what you get out.

We are talking apples and oranges. Obviously when the ambient temp is lower, the overall car performance is increased as the IC performance is also enhanced (being able to provide a lower charge temp). However, when keeping the ambient temp the same, there is no data out there which supports one over the other. The only data which has been shown so far (on FD3S.net) shows the temps at the intake, not after the turbo or IC (before the TB); IMO, the later two are the ones which will really show the difference.

Why do you care about using an Apexi filter over a K&N? K&N has been used for over 40 years on millions of vehicles....they work and filter well. The SR Motorsports/rx7fashion box is a nicely constructed design.

The ARC and Knightsports are unusable with a larger IC so I wouldn't even look at them.

I already own the apexi power induction filters, so that's why I'll install them instead of, for example, K&N. ARC and Knightsports are unusable with a larger IC, that's true, and that's the reason why I'll not get any of them. They're also really expensive...
Mahjik, I agree with you and IC will be my next upgrade :) Thanks for the info again. What I'll do is a heat shield in order to protect the filters from the bay heat. It will be also good-looking. :icon_tup:

I recently purchased my R1 FD and it already had the Apexi power intake which IMHO is a nice looking setup but I'm looking for replacement filters and it seems cheaper to buy a whole brand new setup and replace the filters with the new ones from the box and sell it as used on e-bay than buying just the replacement filters.
Anyone have a good place for the APEXI replacement filters?

nengun have them pretty cheap. im in the same boat as you, im waiting for my replacement filters so in the mean time i rigged up something with some cheap but decent filters.
