Any1 else have dual EGT? Too many gauges to monitor?

Well I think I got carried away allthough they may not have added the fuel pressure but I got:
tach
boost
water temp
oil temp
egt (front rotor)
egt (rear rotor)
AFR
fuel pressure (maybe, have to check order)

GOing to do the 4 or 5 pod center channel and then 3 above radio in DIN panel. I know the tach is redundant but the stocker is too low at high speed. I also have Pivot Pro mini shift lights. The a-pillar is in the way for autox even with just one. I don't really need the fuel pressure, well I don't need the egt's or afr either but it's nice to have.

So if you also have alot of them do you find yourself taking your eyes off the road too much to check each or do you only glance at red lights and every once in a while?

If you have dual egt's has it helped with tuning and have you noticed much of a difference in temps between rotor housings?

RE-Amemiya 03-06-07 07:06 PM

Just a question...don't you listen to the engine to know when to shift, instead of looking at the tach? You should know when to shift, and not need to rely (sp?) on the tach #'s.

I'd imagine that people running that many gauges would only look at them every once in a while to make sure things are running okay, that's what the warning (peak) lights are for. You shouldn't be looking at the gauges all the time anyway, as you should know.

Just my .02

I can listen in a piston engine, easily done on my CRX. Not a rotary, especially not a bb single turbo. The Resises is even quieter but the RX8 and RX7 with OEM ECU has a warning redline beep. I have a PFC and so no warning beep. Most of the time on the street you can glance down and/or guess when to shift close to and below redline. When doing over 120mph, you don't want to glance down at all and RPM's is instantly quick with a downshift that it's extremely easy to go well in to redline. I didn't get warning lights unfortunately. I didn't want to spend $2k on Defi gauges. I got Glow Gauges and spent $400 instead.

i believe BLitzed33 (greg) is using 2 egts... pm him

Gotcha, hate to go off topic, but why doesn't the PFC have the function of the redline beep? I realize it's a separate ECU and that the commander won't have one. You can PM me if you want.

EatsSRT-4s 03-06-07 08:59 PM

i have PFC and my car still has the beep over 7500 rpm.

GoRacer 03-06-07 09:42 PM

^ go hit redline and repost.

There was someone that did a thread in the ECU section to try to retain the redline beep with the PFC but I don't have the link. I have no idea why it doesn't retain it, maybe something to do with the slight difference of JDM models which the PFC was designed for.

mono4lamar 03-06-07 09:55 PM

i have the pfc and it beeps...

GoRacer 03-06-07 10:08 PM

wtf  how are you guys getting the beep when no one else does? Do you two have the pins pulled?

technomentor 03-06-07 11:49 PM

Have PFC, pins are not pulled, mine beeps.

GoRacer 03-07-07 12:16 AM

oh man, if that's the secret then i'm putting the pins back in. I have a '94 and didn't have the A/C problem witht he pins in but my mechanic pulled them anyhow.

mono4lamar 03-07-07 09:47 AM

^ i dont think its the pins. i have the four wires pulled from the harness. the secret lives on! :)
1)EGR valve control (Blue/Yellow).
2)EGR switch (Blue/Green).
3)AWS (Brown/Yellow).
4)Split Air Bypass Solenoid (Black/Red).

dradon03 03-07-07 10:07 AM

The beep is to indicate over boost no?

The rx-8's functions as a "hey you are reving 9,000rpm" but I was undert the impression that the rx7's was not there for the same reason at all.

SPICcnmGT 03-07-07 11:06 AM

I have the beep also at 7500+ and the pins are out.

Overboost is the EGT light flashing, not a beep.

Also if you are worried about downshifting at 120mph, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? You only have two gears going that fast, and you are usually pulling through 120mph, not cruising waiting on someone to race at that speed.

I've been looking at getting this one. I've been meaning to call them and find out if the sensor output is 0-5V so that it could be datalogged. Already have the SPA oil temp/press and water temp/fuel press gauges with J&S knock gauge in a 3-din gauge panel above the stero.

I have the stock cluster (linearize coolant temp)...out of sight and I have boost, oil temp, dual egt, and a WB monitor w/ EGT (final EGT entering the cat…so I can keep the temps in check so I don’t melt it).

Tuning: I use boost, dual egt and the WB. I datalog everything except the rear rotor EGT. The plan is to use the analog dual EGT gauge to trim each rotor to get equal burn. Then datalog and tune.

Shakedown: oil/coolant temp and final EGT…make sure everything is in check, and stays in check.

Driving/autoX/track: I use the tach.

Yep. Lost of gauges are good for tuning. When you're not tuning they may as well be in the trash because nobody looks at them. Everyone swears they do, but they don't.

Whenever I'm instructing I ask the lots-o-gauges people what their oil temp/fuel pressure/air fuel ratio or anything else they are supposedly monitoring was while on the track. They never have any fuc*ing idea.

I beat the piss out of my car constantly. What do I look at? The tach and a quick glance at oil pressure and coolant temp at least once per lap. If you have to drive with your eyes inside the car for fear of something breaking you have big problems.

Well the tach is too hard to see on the track with a helmet so i'm going with a 52mm tach in the quad pod (or quintpod) with boost, water and oil temps. The temps I would glance alot at. boost has been solid, so no worry's there. I do have a pivot shift light so the additional tach may not be necassary. I didn't think oil pressure was that necessary to monitor since it was replaced with a boost gauge on the newer JDM FD's.

Is the dual EGT guages worth it just by themselves without a wideband? I know the A/F isn't realtime acurate either but it could give me enough warning to pull the car over and/or take it in tot he shop. I would place those 3 in the DIN panel with the radio. THey would be there when I needed them otherwise out of the way when I don't.

Fuel pressure I may not get anymore. After it's set it won't change unless smething goes bad. Well if i get the 5 gauge pod then i'll get it.

Dubalup - How can you see the tach on the track? I'm not that tall, i'm 5-10 and the OEM tach is too low for me.

DamonB - Yeah, I want to limit the gauges to what I need. It would be too hard to look at them and take too long to read them on the track. That's why I prefer the warning gauges but at $200/ea + controller it's too many dead presidents.

dual EGT isn't worth it...except tuning...with a WB.

Fuel pressure...same thing. Once you make sure you are dialed in, and your pump can keep up the demand with the tune, it should be good to go.

Sad to say...most failures are probably due to the quality of the modifing. Use good parts and do a good install, do it right...do it once.

How can I see the tach??? It's the biggest tach I've ever seen (besides FC's)! Doesn't make sense to me to use a 52mm one when the stocker is dead center. Maybe adjust your seat???

Quick glances, exhaust note, and torque are good indicators when to shift.

Seriously, any driving condition you don't need more than what Mazda provides (with an improvement with the coolant temp gauge ;) )...everything else is for tuning purposes. Again, first be confident in your build and then your tune.

It doesn't have to be that expensive. If you use senders with warning switches in them the same sender will drive the gauge as well as provide the means to illuminate a warning light or sound a buzzer when a certain parameter is reached.

You can find such things at www.egauges.com or true racecar supply houses such as www.pegasusautoracing.com

Right. Build the thing correctly and you won't have to monitor it constantly. If it does up and catastrophically fail one day all the gauge is going to do is tell you something is already broken. Just build reliability into the system from the get go.

GoRacer 03-07-07 08:30 PM

Well I originally wanted (still do want) warning gauges so I wouldn't have to monitor them and only have to look when I get a warning light and beep. Also I could replay them to see where it maxed out at.

3 Defi links + controller is $600 :(
Glow Shift Gauges are $40ea
SPA dual EGT is nice but still not wideband

Trout2 03-07-07 09:54 PM

The SPA has an alarm output. You can connect a buzzer, boost cut, etc.

Madee 03-08-07 05:01 AM

Love the SPA gauges because you get two in one, a real space saver and I have two I'm mounting in the dash cluster. On the dual EGT, SPA only supplies straight probes not 90 degree which I needed for the two tapped holes in my pre-turbo manifold. Went with the Pineapple Racing dual EGT and at $249 it's less than half the cost of the SPA.
