another silly knock question

i recently got my car back from getting a new pineapple streetport, single turbo, fuel ect. installed, broken in, and now tuned to .8bar, or 10psi (for now).
my tuner, shares office space and a mustang dyno with trey cobb (formerly of rp,so he even has help), and he tunes TONS of cars, including rotaries. he told me the following of the knock sensor numbers:
under 50 is fine.
above 50 you want to keep your eye on it.
over 100 is bad.
and about 120 your motor should be gone.

i've read up on it and i know that it is relative to each car. i know where it is, what it is, and how it works. and i know that shifting, bumps in the road, can make it spike to well over 100.
i know it shouldn't be a heavy factor in tuning, but he uses it still. i told him that i read and heard that they pretty much suck and aren't very accurate. he said that they were suprisingly accurate and wanted me to keep an eye on it.
since i got the car back, i've consistantly seen over 50, and last night 114. although it could have been a shift, i didn't have the datalogit hooked up at the time, and passsenger didn't see when it happened (he was a little scared at how much it pulled). still, i get consistant numbers, usually 40-85 in any one gear pull, and i have a fulltime wideband installed too. i'm way rich at the time it gets the higher knocks. i know that there is alot of tuning left and hopefully he can iron all this out. i run 100 octane all the time too. so i cant imagine i'd actually blow, or even have high knock with what i have going on. i guess my question is, is this high of knock normal (as normal as it can get) with how i'm running right now? just to recap what i have.
100 octane
new platinum plugs
new streetport
new single turbo
hks ign.
wideband (running in 10's) running low cause its COLD!
pfc and datalogit
no idea what timing he's running, i'm new at the the whole tuning, reading data, thing. he said its pretty conservative though.

should i be worried?
can my tuner fix this?
should i care about my knock being this high?
am i just paranoid?
is 85 high for 10psi?
ah, so many questions.... sorry, i'm just trying to figure this out.
thanks for any input guys:)

It's only relative because each one of our cars has varying levels of loose/unsecured/etc. issues with our own respective knock sensors.

While starting my car:

yeah, i saw that on the other thread. i know they can go crazy like that. i'm just wondering if my 85 is just too high with what i'm running.
that's pretty funny though:)

My point is that if I'm seeing 200 on startup that the sensors are prone to failure and loosening. Check that out first.

paximus 01-04-04 04:42 PM

i checked it last night as i was reading through all the threads, it still looks great and isn't loose at all. i did it at 2 am last night, it was freezing!! so i know it should be all working correctly. but i guess you never know what it looks like inside, i didn't take it out, just made sure it was tight and the wire's were fine.

what does it say with your dataloggit? the commander is almost always wrong.

911GT2 01-04-04 04:49 PM

How do you get the commander to display knock in number format instead of a little jumping bar graph? Sorry for the hijack :)

paximus 01-04-04 04:52 PM

the commander only says the peak, you can put it on any of the channels and it'll just do the little graph, you can put the knock on the one channel and its the whole commander screen, then you can easily see when it jumps up.
allrotor93, i'm hooking up the datalogit in a few minutes and going for a spin, i'll let you know. i just gotta spend some time and figure out how to work the damn thing. i've got some questions about it. how do i get the updates for this thing anyway?

Could high knock #s be the result of a poorly built engine (seals not seated well)? With 100 octane and rich air fuel that engine should have very low #s. How aggressive is the timing?

allrotor93 01-04-04 06:00 PM

if you get high knock through the datalogit i would be worried. i was getting in the high 200's and when it was datalogged it was only in the low 10s.

for numbers press 2 the right once on the commander. If you want it to lock the highest number press up on the commander, down to reset the numbers. I believe thats right, havent played with the FD for a few weeks now

paximus 01-04-04 10:05 PM

ok, i hooked up the laptop, and read my datalogit readings for knock. i feel much better now. the highest i ever saw was 48, and on my commander it was much, much, higher. most of the time it was under 20, so i'm not worried anymore, thanks for your help though guys.
i'm finally figuring out this datalogit.
