This is an idea of something i thought about making about 7 years ago. Finally somone caught up.

So ive been debating about getting one of these and having it welded into my rediculously loud N1 muffler section, I think this would give me the best of every world. Anyone ever tried something like this? pros? cons?

Im assuming Jason will carry it as soon as it hits the market :D

Too much back pressure? Also it says the handheld control unit is sold seperately.

too much backpressure? ITs made to be used as a silencer, With it set all the way open the backpressure difference between it being their and not should be neglegable. and its not meant to ever be fully closed, just a percentage for silencing.

And how would apexi suck us for every penny we had if it came with the handheld control unit :D

JIC offered that on one of the JDM exhausts (allready built in).

Apex has had this for about 8 years now, but I believe without the fancy controller. I think it is called the exhaust valve control unit.

well then maybe they beat me to the idea :D

so if its been out that long has anyone actually tried one?

I wouldn't put one of those things on my car. How cheesy, to me it seems like another opportunity for some ricer to cobble in some bad wiring and poorly mount an aftermarket do-hicky...

I wasent so much refering to the electronic control unit, as much as i was talking about using the valve in the exhaust as a silencer. I like my exhaust how it is, and trust me when i say i dont like clutter in the cockpit, but i cant take the drone on the highway, This seems like a logical approach instead of having to put a silencer in every time i leave my town.

i know the Mitsubishi Evo8 uses something similar to that...

BMW has used them for years, used to block off one of the two exhaust tips

VR4's have this too. A button makes either both mufflers flow or just one thats resonated. I like what Jason posted tho.

Didn't somebody make an exhaust with a little "cat penis" (maybe it was a doggy dick) that popped out at higher boost... to hopefully give you more back-pressure for low end boost response, and then higher flow at the high end? SARD? maybe?

I gather though that it popped out to easily... it would really have to have some sophisticated tuning to really be right.

This thing looks like it wouldn't restrict eficiently... when even partially closed it would create alot of turbulence.

I've bigtime read up on the ECV - here's a few things about it.

First off, you have to have the "plain" ECV to start with, then you can get the new electronic control system to control it. The ECV, for our cars, is what's shown above - a short piece of 80mm pipe with a butterfly valve in it. The ECV has a knob that goes in the cockpit - you can manually open and close the valve.

The new DECS ECV electronically controls it. You can actually set up programs - like open so much at so much RPM, make little "maps" to set when and how much the valve opens, etc. You can also override the setting in the DECS to go full open or near-full-closed - for example, if you want full power, or close it up when you're pulling into the house late at night.

I've thought about getting one - I really dig gadgets to start with, and I used to love the Super Silencer I had for my N1 exhaust on my old FC. Whenever I went on a car trip, I'd pop the silencer in - nice, quiet interstate cruising with NO 3000 RPM drone. Once I arrived, I could pop it out and have fun. But, being able to control it in the cockpit ALL the time is pretty damn cool, especially with how loud our cars can be.

My only qualms would be having a local muffler shop cut and weld that thing in - most of the work I've seen the local shops do, I wouldn't trust them to do it properly :). Not to mention it's gonna cost to get the whole setup.
