Another goofy attempt at an invention...

I had a vision, when my tubos started leaking some oil out the hot side. i noticed while driving it wasnt aproblem..but if it sat and idled the oil would collect near the downpipe/cat flange and since the gasket was blown the oil was leaking out..which hinted me to it..

The turbos have always boosted fine and no oil was leaking in the compressor side. ( im not running boost now since It's a new motor and all).

I thought of 2 things that could reduce this smoke..

1: remove cat...im sure that after the oil accumulates and gas is given, when the oil gets blown through th exhaust, the hot cat definately helps to increase the intensity of the smoke that comes out. There would still be some smoke im sure..but thats like throwing oil on a hot frying pan..

2:Devise a way to evacuate the oil from the exhaust using engine vac :) Hence the sketch. I was thinking about putting a brass fitting into the midpipe pipe right after the flange. within the pipe i wanted to weld in a small thing and low profile baffle that sort of cought incoming oil and in the back corner where the baffle tapers down to the pipe, i would put the fitting. the fitting would have a nipple and i would attach a few inches of rubber hose to it, then run brake line up and across teh firewall, and then use more rubber hose to cover the few inches between that, the catch can, and the intake manifold. the catch can would catch the oil, while the check valve between the catch can and the manifold would make sure no boost would leak..whenever the time came for that. The only thing I am concerned about is the effects of a minor amount of exhaust gas being sucked into the intake manifold. this vacuum would only really bepresent under idling at stop lights, and cruising. under throttle at 0 vac it wouldn't be an issue. Then theres the minor vac. leak that would occur..but i think that would be minor as well, since it would be exhaust gas it would be sucking in...i mean...it would be sort of like EGR i guess lol. Last thing is i dont knwo if 15-18 inhg of engien vac is enough to pull oil up to hat point..oil is far less dense than mercury so i'll hold it possible that it can happen...just a thought, hoever cracked out it may be :)

any input?

Not to sound like a wise ass, but why not just fix the leaking turbos from which the oil is coming out of? I kinda like to fix the problems, not not try to invent more complicated solutions.

As for your idea, I'm not sure there's enough engine vacuum to pull the oil into a catch can. It's late and I'm not going to look up the specific gravity of oil, but with a low engine vacuum, and oil being fairly heavy and pulling it through a small pipe, I would think it would be hard to move. (could be wrong)

I don't think the 14.7 lbs or so of atmospheric pressure is going to suck oil through lines very well. how much are replacement turbos going for?

Sounds like a ghetto EGR valve to me...

If I understand this correctly, you would be recirculating exhaust into the intake.

JEZBUS - paint has a text function too.

I think there would be vacuum >> Reservoir >> Exhaust

so *in theory* he's hoping that this vacuum subsystem will suck the blow-by oil out of the exhaust into the reservoir. The presence of oil in the vacuum lines would *in theory* seal the vacuum line from sucking up exhaust gas.

it should work but, its clearly just a quick fix

Bacon 04-10-07 04:56 PM

Fits it right, there’s no point to fabricate something to band aid a easy problem to fix.
Also if your dripping oil out your down pipe you’ve got a bigger problem than a pep boys fix…

im just trying to sell the car...i dont wanna put new turbos in..especially since i just put it all back together. it doesnt leak much oil...but it's just a neasance..i'll see what happens, i mean it'll cost me like 5 bucks since i have all the parts besides the few feet of brake line i'll need...

HobbeZ 04-10-07 10:52 PM

i feel sorry for the person that buys your car

if it drips enough to need to build this contraption it leaks wayyyy to much. good idea to rig it up so you headache is now the next owners problem.....

Sr20fd3st 04-11-07 10:44 PM

eh don't make me feel guilty now...maybe new turbos are in order...:(anyone have some for free? lol or wanna trade for some tools?

Bacon 04-11-07 11:53 PM

rebuild em, or look around for a cheap set, they pop up here and there

Upgrayedd 04-12-07 10:21 AM

I have an extra set of stock twins with about 70k miles. No leaks, missing a couple oil lines. PM me for pics if you're interested. I'll be very reasonable with a price.

I agree... and are you sure its your turbos?? could be other issues....

another kid finds out the hard way he can't afford an FD...pawns off some rig'd up FD to another kid...circle continues

Sr20fd3st 04-12-07 11:08 AM

and it all starts with some fucker who sells the car from across the country (bought by me) with a garentee that there are no problems, shows flase compression results, and alot more including vac line fuck ups and other things, so when i get it i have a project car instead of a ready to drive car infront of me. motor blows a few months down the road and puts me in debt with a rebuild, replacing turbos, and about 3k of other shit, so now im stuck with alot of debt and a car that pisses me off now when i look at it..

Sr20fd3st 04-12-07 11:09 AM

and it had one hell of an oil leak (of course their statement read "no known leaks"...you cant miss a fuckin oil leak that dumps a quart overnight. so yes..it all starts somewhere, but not with me

teknics 04-12-07 11:18 AM

did you miss all the warning about buying an FD? i mean, i know how few times people say to have plenty of money on the side no matter what the buyer says.

let me guess...you took a loan out to buy the car too?

kevin.

Sr20fd3st 04-12-07 11:23 AM

capital one...$12,500, 6 years. It's been a year...Thingsbeen my dream car since i as in the 7th grade..i couldnt help it :(

Upgrayedd 04-12-07 01:52 PM

^Exactly why I paid mine off in 2yrs. Knew problems would eventually be coming... But mine, sir, I had wanted since the original Gran Turismo, whenever that was...

PM sent for the turbos.

Sr20fd3st 04-12-07 09:01 PM

great deal on those turbos. pm'd you and hell yea i'll take em :) for the record this ghetto rigging wasnt an intent to pass on to someone else it was an intent for me to rig it temporarily so i could break the motor in and drive it around myself for long enough to finish the break in and then eventually put new turbos in when i found a definate buyer...but it would end up being a pain in the ass to set it up and all that, and with a deal like mazdatim's i figure what the hell :)

Upgrayedd 04-12-07 09:24 PM

PM Returned Thanks for the biz
