Almost another FD total....

This morning I’m motoring 70mph on the two-lane toll road in the FD and come up to an overpass with an on-ramp. I’m in the left lane to avoid the slowdown of merging traffic but keeping an eye out for the usual Soccer SUV mommies, and this late for high school tool in a spanking new black Mazda3(no plates) DIVES over into the fast lane directly in my path doing about 50. No blind spot or mirror check. With nowhere to escape, my options were:

A. I put myself into the median barricade and take out the side NASCAR-style.
B. I take the hit in the right front and everyone does the 70mph merry-go-round.
C. Stand on the brakes and brace for impact.

I chose C. I stomped, the FD squealed, getting squirrelly before the ABS kicked in. He squeaked in front with inches to spare, then saw me in his mirror as other traffic backed off in my tire smoke(new Yoko EVS100’s, dammit!

He moved over into the right lane, I pulled aside with a full shot of adrenalin, and the turd is smiling but looking straight ahead. SMILING!!

Think quick Toad, his exit lane/ramp was coming up fast. Pressed for time and not wanting to go to jail, I chose “the Lincoln Bath”. I dropped my window, dumped the ashtray toll change on the passenger seat and grabbed a fistful. He moved into his exit lane and I boosted in front and let off to reel him in close. All clear behind him avoiding collateral damage, I flipped the handful high overhead(avoiding my deck-lid) and was rewarded with a starred windshield and chipped bumper as he backed off. Moving back into thru traffic, he didn’t follow but the Finger was visible, lol. His daddy’s going to be pissed! :)

In any other car I’d be toast. Other commuters gave me thumbs up for avoiding a serious multi-car accident. The FD brakes saved my ass, and who says dead presidents aren't useful?

good story. Im glad your road skills outweigh his.

SpeedKing 04-28-04 01:43 PM

Haha, road rage does have its merits sometimes, eh?!

And man, you got lucky, glad it worked out in the end! :D

Scrapiron7 04-28-04 01:44 PM

Bon3yard 04-28-04 01:48 PM

Great job. He won't mess around an RX-7 again. :D

adam c 04-28-04 01:49 PM

I knew there was another reason I keep my change in that ash tray:)

Too bad that the guy didn't at least try to apologize. It may have saved him from the Toadmans wrath ;)

alwan16 04-28-04 01:49 PM

you are a bad man!

SiKoPaThX 04-28-04 01:50 PM

Ya, I like the concept but is anyone ever worried about someone taking down your plate #?

Toadman 04-28-04 01:51 PM

I rarely road rage. If he was apologetic, maybe mouth the words "I'm sorry and f'd up" or raise his hands, I'd have cooled off and let it slide. It was a 150-shot of adrenalin life-flashing-before-your-eyes moment. ABS saved me from flat-spotting the tires at the least. He had no time to get my plate(what he could see thru the windshield). Gravel trucks toss up debris all the time.

turbojeff 04-28-04 01:55 PM

I love the "lincoln bath"!

Congrats on minimizing a bad situation.

RX-187 04-28-04 01:55 PM

Glad to hear that you and your car are alright. Good story, I could just imagine the swarm of change coming outta your car and hitting the guy's sorry ass face.

r0gu3 04-28-04 02:15 PM

I was in a similar situation where I had to go onto the shoulder to avoid someone (They were on a cell phone not paying attention) and the mother ****er called the cops on my for drunk driving because I flicked him off.

twinturboteddy 04-28-04 02:17 PM

OMG, buwahahahaha.

Lincoln bath, I'll have to remember that.

MrDizzy 04-28-04 02:20 PM

Came close myself a few weeks ago...

:cursing: Goddam cell phone users! :madfawk:

I live 1.5 miles from work and almost had an accident last night. Heading west on Beltline approaching Marsh is 3 lanes wide and I'm in the middle. The left lane is at a stop because the turn lane at Marsh is backed up and some cars were nice and left a hole so as not to block the east bound left turn lane across Beltline. Those of us in the middle and right lanes are moving nicely but slowing because the stoplight ahead just turned green and traffic is just now clearing. At this point a BMW 5 series pulls immediately in front of me from the hole in the left lane trying to cross the street. D*ckhead never even checked all 3 lanes of traffic and he's yacking on his cell phone. First thing I saw was big car and cellphone against driver's right ear  I punch the brakes hard as I can and know I ain't gonna stop in time. Luckily the guy in the right lane beside me had turned into the shopping center so there was a hole I could now swerve into and pass around the BMW which is now at a stop directly in the middle lane (I'm under full ABS the whole time). Christ it scared the crap out of me. If an RX-7 that is already at least 5 mph under the limit and on brand new tires can't stop in time, nobody could have stopped in time. The car beside me may have even pulled over on purpose to give me room to move. If he did I owe that guy a huge favor; don't know who it was.

If that car hadn't turned into the shopping center I would have to had to hit the Bimmer. Jerkwad never even dropped or hung up his phone, just motored on across the road since all the traffic had stopped thinking they were getting ready to see an accident. I thought I was done for and got really lucky. Wish I had a gun; I would have shot at the BMW. :ar:

dubulup 04-28-04 02:41 PM

I was behind a guy in a beamer yesterday (on his fawking phone) with 5 min. two people had honked horns at this guy and one lady had to slam on her brakes and this guy had the nerve to giver her the finger...HANG UP THE FAWKING PHONES!!!

great story Toadman!! Love it!!!

Nice driving (both of you! DamonB)

I hate idiot drivers, I have had a few close calls myself. But nothing is worse then getting out of work and walking around the side of your FD only to notice the rear quarter pannel right behind the tire has been hit by what it looks like someone pulling into the spot next to me. Didn't even leave a note or anything.

People really need to have more respect for other drivers & their cars.

Nice driving, I love the 'Lincoln Bath'. Glad you got out with no damage.

skunks 04-28-04 03:50 PM

wow nice move. i have had a few close calls with bad drivers myself and have thanked god i was in my fd when it happened. recently i was getting off the highway (where it goes from highway to regular city streets) and there was a left turn/uturn lane on my left had side comming up, about 5-10 car lenghts away. i was in the fast lane and i noticed that a car on right of me was comming closer and closer and then suddenly realised, she aint gonna stop. i quickly cut over to my left lane and did the two feet in (stomped on the brakes and clutch as hard as i could) and came to a very quick stop. if i was driving my fc or any of my other cars, i would have probally lost it (due to yanking the steering wheel to the side at that speed+craptastic suspension) or not have been able to stop fast enough. emergency lane changes and stopping power for a stock fd are amazing. i wish i could have been able to catch up to her and do what you did but on comming traffic (even fd's cant go from 0-60 or 70mph with in 5-10 feet) and a few red lights prevented me. (I'm also on probation so if i get any tickets/trouble in the next 3 months, I go to jail for about 30 days...)

P.S. I wonder how many fd owners have been saved by their abs systems, i know i have been saved a 1/2 a dozen times at least. something to think about when weight reductioning and pulling your abs system...

GoRacer 04-28-04 03:56 PM

I used to carry a spark plug in my leather jacket when I rode my GSXR but never used it. Lucky for you he wasn't driving a fast car. Gotta love those ABS brakes though.
