Air Pump and Air Box Help Needed!
 

The RX7 I have, has had the air box removed and replaced with the cold air pipes. My question is this...
The air pump does not have a hose connected to it and I noticed one on the passenger side of the motor that is not hooked to anything. It is towards the top center of the motor.

I ask how to hook up the pump to the cats because it smells hot and looks smokey when I stop. The muffler shop checked the cats and they tested as good so...

ANy help would be greatly appreciated. Everyone on here has saved us a couple of times already!

P.S> Any suspension parts to RAISE the rx7 about an inch? Air shock adjustable struts etc that anyone would recommend?

The electrical connector to the air pump is unplugged, so it's not doing anything. There should be a filter on the air pump itself or it should be hooked into the intake. The other pipe that's open is the "exhaust" for the air pump system - any air that the engine doesn't need is sent out of that pipe.

That's a kinda homemade lookin' intake, and they usually don't have an air pump hookup. Easiest way to get things going with what you have is find a small filter for the air pump, put the filter up towards the front of the engine bay where the air is cooler, and run a hose. You could put a filter directly on the air pump, but there have been documented cases of air pumps failing since they sucked in hot air from over the turbos - that's the reason for putting the filter where the air is cooler.

If you want a better solution, get a better intake, like the Fighter's Garage intake that has the air pump hookup.

Of course, you'll also need to plug in the air pump's electrical connector to make it active.

Thanks for the info so far. I unplugged it because it was loud with nothing connected to it. I plugged it back in and it is working. (Air is blowing out of the exhaust end).

I ran a hose down and I already had a filter so it is on the pump inlet. My next question, should the cat still have literal heatwaves off of it?

My other cars are old chevy hot rods with no cats so this is new to me! Thanks for all the help as always!!!

Would removing the cat altogether be bad? I know there are supposed to be 2 levels. This car has 2.5 inch exhaust from the cat in the middle of the car on back.

did you have idle problems when you disconnected it? I disconnected the electrical connector cause the clicking annoys the hell out of me and I have no cat anyway... but started messing with my idle.

These cars actually came stock with two cats, a precat and a main cat. If you still have a pre-cat, remove it as soon as possible and replace it with a downpipe. If your talking about the main cat, alot of heat is normal. It works by burning the hydrocarbons not combusted by the engine, so it's suppose to be really hot. In fact, the Airpump supplies it with air to make it even hotter. You can get some header wrap for the downpipe, inlet and outlet pipes from the cat and it helps. I would NOT remove the main cat. The exhaust will really stink, it will be alot louder and most importantly it can lead to boost creep that can blow your engine. Read through the FAQs and stickys for a complete explanation.
BTW, one other option for your intake is simply to go back to stock. Stock airboxes are pretty easy to come by off the parts-for-sale section and it will have all the hook ups. I just suggest this because the car seems new to you and thought that might be easiest.

Idle problems with no airpump aren't universal, but not unusual either. As DaleClark has explained elsewhere idle issues and even hesitation on acceleration can be a side effect.

Hey. I think I still have the brackets that hold the airbox to the chassis. Let me know if you need them. I don't actually have a stock airbox though.

I really liked the stock airbox with the adam_c cheap bastard mod to pull air from along side the radiator. Flowed well, made good power, fit perfectly and didn't have loud airpump or BOV noises.

With regards to suspension, what is the current ride height measured from flat ground to the fender lip?
