Air Pump Affecting Boost?
Can the stock air pump affect the FD's boost response? Or what would be the characteristics of a blown/broken air pump?:wallbash:

If the airpump (on a car with a stock ECU) is removed or non-functional, your idle and throttle response can be all messed up.
Easy enough to check if it's working. At idle, the magnetic clutch should be engaged and the inside wheel should be spinning. Here are a few diagnostic steps you could try if you suspect yours isn't working: https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...59&postcount=8 |
the pulley will literally stop or skip..then keeps going.
|
Any funny noises coming from the pump when it's spinning? With the car off, try spinning the inside portion of the pulley by hand and see if there's a lot of resistance. I've had 2 airpumps fail on my car already due to bad bearings, but you can definitely hear it when they go bad.

it does make a funky sound once reaching 3k... actually does sound like a blown bearing..almost like on a skateboard. Would this affect boost at all or no? I'll take video today if my battery on my camera isn't dead.
|
Well if the bearings are bad then the pump won't spin freely and it'll increase the drag on the motor (unless the belt starts slipping). In theory this could result in some power loss, but it shouldn't directly affect the turbos/boost level.

screw it, take it off

The odd sounds my fd makes. And you can hear in car when the air pump is struggling pulley stops then keeps going/skips. I think the air pump is the source of this |
Sounds like a big boost leak.
You can disable the airpump completely by unplugging the electrical connector to it. With this disconnected, the clutch will never engage. Try this to eliminate the airpump from your equation. I can say with near 100% certainty that the airpump is not causing your secondary boost problems. |
its weird. the car will boost fine...and then it wont... vice versa. Apexi Intake piping was checked...no tears...nothing. So it could be a vac line or bad solenoid Im guessing...but it sounds too loud to be something so minor. I hear the air pump being bad...and trippin out while driving. I think its the primary turbo over the 2ndary..cause the 2nd kicks in hard:Wconfused

This is the exact same problem i have!!
I tried starting a thread and explaining to people what that noise sounds like but it was difficult. Thanks for putting a video up! except there is no answer to the problem? I must have a leak in the same place you do because that is the exact same noise mine is making, intermittently. Does anyone know what this could be? or what some places i could start looking for the leak would be? I'm also on my second air pump and it recently went out, and the bearings are currently making noise but im using it anyway until i can get another one shipped. but i still have this problem even with the air pump disconnected |

it just sounds like you got a pigeon cooing when you shift, lol, that's just what it sounded like to me
