Isn't there people who have eliminated the AST tank to avoid these future problems??? Well besides buying the aluminum one to replace it.

cpa7man 07-22-03 11:21 PM

Yes, lots of people eliminate it. There seems to be some differences of opinion as to the elimination or replcement with a metal ast tank. Do some searches this has been discussed several times.

actually I asked Mahjik about this question and he's given me a real good break down on this subject:

The AST is there to aid in removing air bubbles from the coolant system. I recommend keeping the AST (as in an aftermarket aluminum one).

I have the Pettit AST, but would recommend this one instead:

Without the AST, it's a pain to get all the air out of the coolant system. If you don't mind trying to burp all the air out of the system for about a week, remove it.

It also adds more coolant to the system, which is another bonus.

Yes, very nice looking tank. I still have a stock tank. May be time to upgrade. I'm also looking at doing the radiator at the same time.

Mazda used an AST on the 787b, that should be a good enough answer.

and yes, more coolant too.

Caps...which caps goto the filler and which goes to AST (i.e. the cap's pressure)?

Thanks

The Filler gets a solid (no press relief spring) cap and the AST gets a .8 or .9 bar pressure relief cap
