Are aftermarket crank pulley's worth it?
Looking at getting a new pulley for my REW. I know that some of them require very precise installs as to not mess up the needle bearings. I do not want to risk it for the miniscule amounts of performance I will get. However, I found a Supernow crank pulley on RHD Japan that looked interesting.
Any one have any experience with this crank? http://www.rhdjapan.com/super-now-cr...ley-fd3s-26341 Is it an easy install or will I have to remove the main eshaft bolt? |
No it won't be hard... Take those four bolts out, they attach to the 'pulley' that has the front main e shaft bolt,
It's a matter of taking those 4 bolts off, swapping the pullileys, and reinstalling the bolts.... J. |
Easy install, yup. They claim it's lighter, I'd be curious to know how much. Same diameter so you don't have to worry about messing with your battery charging or water pump cavitating.
That's a nice piece, but only if you still have p/s and a/c. My solution to a lighter main pulley was to ditch the outer one and just run the inner :D |
Most pulleys are simple installs, just unbolt the 4 10mm bolts that hold it to the hub. Removing the hub is where you get into needle bearing problems and stuff. That's the big 19mm bolt that holds the hub on and it's a BITCH to get loose.
IMHO, it's not worth getting a pulley that requires removing the hub. There's only a few like that anyhow. Dale |
Since we are on the subject, are there any aftermarket pulley sets that are worth the money? Oh, and they can't be purple, blue or pink lol.
|
I also have a question since we are on the subject.
Afaik Greddy Pulley kit comes with 2 pulleys, so what are these other 2 pulleys, where can I get them (in blue)? http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/4...0012pulley.jpg |
I am very pleased with my Rotary Extreme pulley set. Billet aluminum and polished. Definitely added extra bling to my already blingy engine bay ;-). As far as power goes, I do not know, as I went single at the same time.
OP... I have a blue lightweight main for $50 shipped if you like to see if you can feel the difference. It came on my car when I bought it. Loosen the belts, and 4 little bolts. Could be worth it to find out. |

^ Holy outragous prices batman!..... Though the pulleys don't seem too bad. $629 for a Twin Power. That is some markup.

The weight difference is not a reason to change the pulleys as it offers a negligible performance improvement--it's 'in the noise' and so that aspect has been grossly oversold.
What is useful is underdriving the accessories, which is where any performance advantage will be realized. The other reason to change pulleys is the bling factor. I have the 4 bolt Pettit pulley. I countersunk the bolt holes to accept socket head screws which are now flush with the surface--looks clean and functions well. |
Thanks for the replies. I have no AC or PS. I'm going single as well so I doubt I'll notice a difference. The bling factor is pretty funny (especially a purple one). Just didn't want to make a huge ordeal with it if I had to remove the main 19mm hub bolt.

If you no longer have AC or PS you can use the Unorthodox Racing Ultra R main pulley. I have the same on my car.

I'm sorry for reviving this thread, but I have a simple question
For all of you running the Touge Factory Pulley set for the FD, what belt did you run. I just ordered a set for my 94 FD, and not sure what the belt number is I need to go buy. Any help would be appreciated instead of me buying different belts till I figured out the right one. |

It says on their website what size belts you will need if you run their pulley kit and still have all the stock accessories. if you're not running an airpump, get and idler pulley kit and it'll come with a belt. |

it depends on what accessories you're still running or if you're still running the airpump.
