Aftermarket Cooling fans for Stock Mount IC's.
 
Hey guys, just wondering where I can find a fan that I can use on a Peter Farell SMIC ? This IC is not very large, so it would have to be a small flat fan. Also, would adding one of these aftermarket fans even be an effective method of cooling ? Just want to get ready for the Hot ass days down here in the Dirty South. Thank you. :cool:

try the spal 8 inch pull fan. this should fit your ic. i think this fan only pull 680cfm though.

I have one on my ASP/M2 Large SMIC. It only pulls about 650 cfm. It was only $30 bucks from ZeroBanger. I don't think it does much to stave off heat soak. I still see 50+C when I drive through SF with all the stop lights in the morning on my way to work Once, I get on the freeway, temps drop down to 30 C(PFC commander)

I had PM'd Maxcooper and he has a much heavier duty fan, 1250 cfm - I think, he said it helped a little while dyno tuning. If I remember correctly, I dont think he saw dramatic difference in temps.

Maybe Max can chime in here.

I guess every little bit helps. Maybe, I'll buy one of ZB's water injection kits...I haven't had a real RX7 project for the last couple of weeks. I miss being in the garage.

i got one from jtech (jaytech?) that works well with a pettit IC, the small one. yeah i still get heat soak but if you touch the surface of the IC covered by your fan it is only warm, while the rows outside the fan are too hot to touch. it helps for sure, just not enough to eliminate heat soak.

Yeah, I'm running a 1250CFM 10" Perma-Cool HP fan. When selecting a fan, be sure to pay attention to the flow ratings -- they vary a lot even for a single fan size (diameter).

It isn't clear that it actually works, with the exception of running on the dyno where it helped a lot. I can't say for sure, though, as I don't have any rigorous test data. Generally, it doesn't seem to change the temps much when I turn it on on the street. Part of that might be the slow, heat-soak-prone stock IAT sensor. It would be nice to do some controlled tests to see if it works or not, but I haven't had time to do that yet.

It might need a shroud to be effective -- it seems likely that it sucks hot air through the uncovered parts of the back of the IC core. It does suck some air throught the IC vent inlet -- you can feel it with your hand near the duct opening. It doesn't seem like it is sucking 1250 CFM, though. A possible downside to a shroud might be that it impedes the flow from simply driving the car at speed. Perhaps some kind of one-way flaps could be rigged up on the back of the shroud. I probably won't try it myself, but it might be worth looking into if you want to experiment.

Please note that my IC is not in the normal spot -- small battery and single turbo led me to move it to the side slightly. The ASP duct still seals against the IC all the way around, though -- it wasn't a major shift.

I'll second what everyone has said here.
I have 2 on my large M2 SMIC and it only helps to get reed of heat soak after you have been parked. Once you start to move, the temps drops quickly and it won't improve anymore compared to not having them.
So in my opinion save the $$$, unless you have nothing else to do with it and you are bored out of your mind.
I'll give you that it might work better, if you have a vented hood.

Well, after doing some research on how to lower intake temps. for the upcoming Heat of New Orleans I have decided the most effective way to get temps. down is by going with an Aquamist 2D system. So, the fan idea is now out the window. Tax $$.......hurry up :cool:

Or you could go front mount and not worry too much about heat soak.

At idle, low air flow thru manifold will still allow the IAT sensor to stay hot due to heating from hot manifold, even wih a cooled IC. When hard acc'n follows, rich-when-hot biased air temp corrections in ecu will hopefully prevent excess lean out with lagging IAT sensor at stock location.

Gross flow area for 10" fan is 79 sq-in, and 50 for the 8". Both exceed the low inlet duct area of less than 24 sq-in, so a proper full shroud with about 1/2" offset should work well, preventing hot air recirc tru IC core.

But to prevent the even worse condition of recirc thru rad core, the rad fans must be turned on at low speed whenever IC fan is used. simple relay would do it.
