adjusting idle... damn oil filter

here is the deal...

Im trying to adjust my idle... im idling kinda low ( about 690-725 .. so i go to the diagnostics box and ground ten. idle drops to 250! normal? also the check engine light flash and holds for about 2 secs then blinks 3 times at about .5 intervals. cycle repeats.. is that normal when you ground ten?!?!

I then was like ok.. maybe my idle is way off. So i go the the back of the TB and find the screw ( looks like it connects to the bottom of the TPS ). But the oil filter is in the way and i dont see how the hell you would adjust it.. Sorry for the n00b question but hey.. im a n00b

the bleeder screw is on the side of the TB, not the back.
It is towards the rear, but faces the master cylinder good luck

well it is on the side ( firewallside ) of the TB right below the TPS.. anyone got a pic?

No, you have to pull the elbow to get to the bleeder screw! Also, you are pulling code 13 with the diagnostic. This is the pressure sensor. I'll see if I can scrounge a pic of the screw, but if you pull the elbow, it's on the bottom right corner.

it's circled :)

and you don't have to pull the elbow to adjust it. To see it, yes. To turn it, no.

dp :(

RX7Wishing 03-31-04 06:08 PM

so my map sensor is bad?!?!

spurvo 03-31-04 06:14 PM

Suposs, you beat me to it! And I apologize.. thought you had to pull the elbow for access.

As for the code, the sensor might be bad, the connector might be off or broken, the wiring might be bad, so on. FOr that matter, the thing might be fine now, and you just need to clear the ECU because it was broken one time in the past. The ECU will remember bad MAP sensor code until you reset it. Pull the ground wire and hold the brake pedal down for 30 seconds. Restart, and check for the code.

Is your car running really rough? Like won't boost well, runs rich with black smoke? This would be typical of a bad pressure sensor causing you to be in limp mode, I'm pretty sure. But then, I don't know how to adjust my idle, now do I? ;)

RX7Wishing 03-31-04 06:21 PM

the car idles ok but runs a little on the rough side. im not in limp mode cause i can redline the car without a problem. I cleared the ecu about 3 days ago ( neg cable was off for about 3 hurs while UIM was off. ). Sometimes it feels like it dosent have tomuch power and other times it feels fine... now if its seeing there is a problem. why the hell dosent the CEL come on when the car is not in diagnostic mode?

RX7Wishing 03-31-04 06:22 PM

also, when i do ground ten. should the idle drop to about 250?!? so this basicly means my idle is off like a mofo?

spurvo 03-31-04 06:32 PM

Well, not to be a dick, but I haven't had to deal with idle problems yet, so I can't say the proper procedure for setting idle. As I read the shop manual, if you ground the TEN and idle is wrong, you should re-set the idle using the AAS. If the idle is still not correct with AAS fully closed, then loosen the locknut on the idle spped control screw (front of TB) and bring it to correct speed. It seems to me you would want to back the AAS out a turn or two first though, to give variability around the new idle speed screw setting. Again, WTF do Iknow?

also be aware that the ECU can control for vacuum leaks up to a certain amount by changing the idle control solenoid. As I understand it, one thing the TEN to ground does is to stop the ECU from compensating for idle speed via the ISC solenoid. Anyway... hope any of this helps! Short answer is no, idle should not drop to 250.

damn.. i need to get shop manual.. i dont even know wtf an AAS is... :/ the never ending problems.. :/

Hey, check out http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/ They have the manuals in Adobe acrobat form. Parts diagrams too. Makes me think I'm an expert (when I'm really not!)
