Add coolant light @ 6500
Problem is when I accelerate thru 1st and 2nd to about 6500 rpm, the add coolant light comes on and stays on -- with that beeeep from hell -- for about 10 seconds. Temperature (via the stock guage) isn't varying. This has only happened twice: the first time, it freaked me out and when I drove it next, I babied it, keeping at less than 4000 revs for most of the trip. But everything seemed to be fine after 45 mins or so, so I revved it up along an empty stretch of road... and again, that damn light at 6500 or thereabouts. After the light went off, I kept it under 3000 until home, and it seemed fine.
Engine is rebuilt, has less than 2000 miles. Car is pretty much stock, except for a downpipe. Runs really well, starts fine, no smoke on startup, no coolant smell, no bubbles in filler neck, smooth idle at about 750. Coolant level does not appear to be going down. When cold, the level at the filler neck is usually about 1.5 - 2 inches below the top, and the coolant tank seems to be about three quarters full. No puking coolant when shutting off, either. Any ideas? Cheers! |
possibly an air pocket in the system/ try bleeding it.

he means try burping it, not bleed.

Good one. You can bleed brakes, and burp cooling systems.
|
Have you removed you AST ?

Sounds like the coolant is not being drawn back into the engine when it cools off (1-2" low at filler neck).
Possible causes: leak in rubber hose from AST to overflow tank, or, more likely poorly sealing AST cap, allowing air to be pulled back rather than coolant. |
