Adaptronic + BNR Problems

Hi all, I keep having the issue when the 2nd turbo kicks in it isn't smooth at all.. Sometimes sputtering/dying feeling before kicking in.

I have done a lot of work and here is the list and all done recently, with a solid compression check on both.

-BNR Stage 3
-Custom inter cooler
-FD3S Secondary Fuel Rail
-ID1700CC injector dynamics
-Innovate LC1 wideband
-Adaptronic EMS
-Racing Beat exhaust(cat back)
-Tuned by Nelson, pretty conservative boost

Is it possible that the Adaptronics/BNR marriage is what's wrong?

There's no reason the adaptronic shouldn't control BNR's. I'd start diving into all the turbo control solenoids and vacuum lines, seeing if I could diagnose a problem. There's a ton of threads about it, just do a quick search.

Contact Adaptronic support, I'm sure they'll be able to diagnose or eliminate the ECU/tune as a cause

I'd tend to agree with ThunderSprinter though, if you're still on the OEM solenoids its not impossible that one's gone bad as most of us know all too well!

Also, what boost are you running?

The factory solenoids were meant to run right around 10psi and others have reported problems with them sticking when trying to run high boost through them.

Some people put a pressure regulator on the sequential system's vacuum lines to keep it right at 10psi to help out.

That was the first thing we did and the solenoids and vac lines were good. I've done a few searches and thought 'maybe' it's just the BNR + Adaptronic marriage wasn't meant to be. Trust me, it's been a bit maddening.

During the tune that was the thought too so we dialed the boost back and even at 8-10psi we were getting the same problems.. Definitely not a 'boost to high' issue, something else is going on and I feel like I've gone thru every other possible solution.

I think I might have Neptune Speed take a look at it, get a fresh set of eyes on it with a different perspective.

Did Adaptronic support have any bright ideas?

Thanks and that link was helpful, hopefully I can use that to troubleshoot. Saw you on BAT for that '93 MB too, I'm hoping that one pulls high teens!

...always looking for my next money pit!

I'll be perfectly honest with you, I strayed from the Adaptronic (I owned one... actually two, I got invoiced twice somehow) because of it's... um... "limited" sequential abilities. I'm not saying it CAN'T handle sequentials, but I went back to a Power FC because of it's proven track record with the twins. Your experience may differ.

Adaptronic controls the twins, and bnr turbos just fine( both sequential and non-sequential)

I found Adaptronic's settings out of the box to be perfect. I played around with them on the dyno and could not make any improvements. I was also extremely impressed with how good the transition was on them. One does need to use a MAC valve to go above 12/13 psi in my experience on the BNRs

It sounds like the OP has a tuning issue( probably the cells are either too rich or too lean during transition).
