Acceleration Problem From Stop
The past week my FD has been running odd. When I'm parked, or completely stopped, it has a hard time moving. Say I go up to a stop sign and stop completely, when I go to give it gas, it takes a lot to get it moving. I usually have to go to about 4-5k RPMs to get it to move. But after it moves, it starts running pretty much normal. Normal speed to RPM ratio by the time I'm in 2nd. Before this started happening, when I was in stop-in-go traffic, after about 5-10 min in traffic, I would get choking from the exhaust, and minor backfires after I let off the accelerator. Also, the engine has been running hotter than normal.

In your engine bay (If your standing right infront of the car) go to the top right corner and find a little sensor box about 2 inches in length. It will have a vacuum hose connected to it, unplug and plug, and make sure to tie it down with a zip tie.

My first instinct is slipping clutch. Stock clutch? Mileage on it/the car?

Check your exhaust backpressure. Or get a vaccum reading. Or both.

So it has progressively gotten worst and I have stopped driving the car completely until I fix the problem.
Today I drove to lunch and when I got in the car to head back, it was quite worst. It wouldn't budge even at 5k RPMs when I got to 6 it moved and got me going, but when I slightly let off the accellerator I got a huge backfire. So I shut her down and got a ride. Could it be a bad pressure plate? It has to be something with the clutch right? |

If you dump the clutch while in 1st gear at a stop does the car die immediately? If it doesn't, your clutch is slipping. If it does your clutch is most likely fine.
The backfire has got to be a separate issue, as the clutch really doesn't affect the way your engine runs. |
I believe if it's the clutch disc you should be able to, with the car running, put it in 1st, 2nd etc (any gear) and the car won't stall. You can do this since the disc is no longer there to transfer the power from the engine to the transmission.

Yes that is correct, If it doesn't die Immediately you have lost your connection from the engine to the wheels. So there will technically be nothing to stall your engine out.

he means start the car, push the clutch in, put it in first with the car idling. If it stalls, the disc is good, or at least not gone, if it doesn't stall go buy a new clutch.

Yes they are saying take your foot off the clutch. If the clutch is fine it will grab, and the car should stall. If the clutch is slipping it will not grab at all or it will very little and the car should continue to idle.

Dump the clutch aka release the clutch very quickly.

So I tried it out and it DID NOT stall when I let off the clutch in gear. So it is indeed the disk.
But my question is, should I replace just the disk? Or whole clutch? If the disk is worn out, does that mean the rest of the clutch is going bad? Seems like the smart thing to do since its a pain to replace anything to do with the clutch, plus I'm sure it would increase performance and I won't have to worry about the clutch anymore. Just give me some validations/ opinions please! |
Replace it all, clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel, pilot bearing, throw out bearing. Might even want to do the rear main seal since you'll have access to it.

DO NOT force it into gear. Just push with a little preasure. If it doesn't want to go into any gear, chances are the clutch is OK. Sorry for not being more clear. |
