Ok i crashed my 1998 Trans Am and the rents are making me get rid of it  . So now i have to get another car. I know a guy that has a 97 Rx-7 for sale that he'll let go for 11k. The car is completely stoock, never raped or abused. I am seriously considering it, but i dunno. What do you guys think?

I think you have no clue about anything of the car other than it's an RX-7. There are no street-legal '97 RX-7's in the US, and they all came with turbos. ;)

AgentUnkind 11-21-04 12:05 PM

First off, it's not an American edition of the vehicle, so that makes it a little skeptical, the 7 stopped being produced for the American market in 95. So if anything its a Japanese market vehicle. How many miles are on it, and also to these cars cost a bucket load to keep running. They are relaible, WHEN well taken care of and all matenince is done on a regular basis. But this can and will get cost when you pop your motor, not if you pop it but when you pop it.

BLKICE690 11-21-04 12:13 PM

well i babied the TA. so i believe the motor should last a while. I havent seen the car yet all i know is it was the guy's project car. I have to call him to get a look at it. All i know about rotories are that they are very powerful and tempermental motors. Treat them right and you'll enjoy them. I'll find out the mileage and the thing is i prolly do a motor swap anyway. Seen vids of RX7 with an LS1 doin 12s stock. Plus RX7s car is pretty f*ckin sweet.

P.S. not a 97 my buddy just said that its a newer body style he doesnt know what yr though. i personally havent seen the car. So when i do ill take pics and put em up.

I hope you have your flame suit on BLKICE, here is comes!

1QWIK7 11-21-04 12:18 PM

why get this car just to do a motor swap?

just get the car with the engine you're gonna swap in...

BLKICE690 11-21-04 12:22 PM

im thinkin of the possibilities and i dont know if i would

diablone 11-21-04 12:30 PM

Buy another TransAm.

Not happenin. I think an RX7 would be good. Depending on how it feels ill keep it stock or tune it a little bit. The reason for me wanting one is

1. Handling
2. Performance
3. Reputation
4. Looks

This car is simply too good to pass up. If i motorswap id swap to a rotary with less miles or get it rebuilt. Luckily for me we have a rotary shop near me.

1QWIK7 11-21-04 12:41 PM

you forgot something

5. Cause im rich

these cars need money, i hope you have it

and i suggest do alot of studying before buying this car cause that will give you less headaches in the long run

And sixth...

6. A second car for daily driving that is owned by you to be dependant on.

BLKICE690 11-21-04 12:49 PM

I am not rich. The only reason i can get the car is cause im fixin the TA and sellin it for 9-10 grand. I know the guy selling it and he wants to get rid of it. If i need to get somethin done to the car or help wit it i can find people. Also i am on here to get help. I dont want to buy the car and not know how to take care of it. Cause i know how other people would feel. I know more about V8s and american cars than i do about Japanese cars. Especially rotary motors. Thats why i am on here for some guidance b4 i set foot into a sinking pit.

1QWIK7 11-21-04 01:04 PM

so you're fixing the other car to sell it? ....ok

then you're getting an estimate of 9-10k for it, which is about enough to get an FD thats in running condition, maybe not be in good running condition but it prob runs.. it will prob have a rebuild due along with other misc stuff cause our cars are 10+years old..

if you know alot about american, just stay with it.. i mean im not trying to make you get something you dont want or stopping you but i hate to see another one of our cars in the junkyard or worse cause someone doesnt know what he/she is doing.. its bad enough our cars are becoming more common in being owned by young kids and its bad enough our cars are rare..i hate to see them go down.

you def need a daily driver/and more money to keep this car reliable TO daily drive..

just a heads up, these cars are no joke, its either put up or stay down..

BLKICE690 11-22-04 12:31 PM

I know exactly how you feel i am the same way about my other car. I rather not have to let it go or seel it, but for now it has to be done. If i got this FD i would be able to expand my knowledge about other cars. Plus, this motor has a lot of potential and i want to learn why, how, and if it can be reproduced on a more reliable level. I have respect for american muscle cars, now it is time for me to respect japanese muscle cars. :D (hondas are not included) :rlaugh:

If your parents have any input on your car, you are too young to own an FD..

1QWIK7 11-22-04 12:37 PM

^^LOL in a way thats true but in a way thats not

some parents have rules of where it doesnt matter how old you are, as long as you're living under their roof, what they say goes..

so he can be 23 and cant do shiat cause he lives with his rents..

Black97VR4 11-22-04 12:40 PM

If your parents say no to a T/A then there's no way in hell they will let you own a RX-7.

Meiogirl 11-22-04 12:41 PM

just keep in mind to maintain an RX7, youll need at least $300/mo in case of emergency. they are also hard as hell to get to pass inspection. so be thinking about another 400-500 everytime you have to do this for fixes.
you might have the cash to get it right now, but you need the income to keep it going. its a serious love/hate relationship with these cars, nothing like a TransAm.

saburo 11-22-04 02:50 PM

I sense no aura from this young man. To wield the power of the FD you must train your mind, body and spirit to accept it. Coming to terms with the machine is my life long goal.

cthomp21 11-22-04 03:40 PM

"I am seriously considering it, but i dunno. What do you guys think?"

I think.... your parents should probably have enough sense not to let you get an FD.

Go for some American turbo muscle, like a Typhoon or Syclone, that won't get you in as much trouble.

I'd say as long as you have patience, you don't absolutely need a running/working car everyday and your willing to learn, like me I think your ok. I saw it as the same opportune way to expand my knowledge and finally peice together a project car.
