ABS removal - catching up on writeups part 1
 

I am playing catchup, so keep in mine I did this over the winter and have been driving with no abs for 1/2 the track season now.

Ok, first let me give props to the others that lead the way on the abs removal, I just followed their lead.

The first link above has the full details on how to do ti, so I am not going to rewrite it, but I do want to point out that since I road track race and dont drag race, I did not need a line lock, so my setup is without the line lock.

Ok, now my side notes and notes on the mod:

Side notes:
I picked up brake line from a local NAPA, but for the metric connections, I just scavenged them from the old lines that came off. So I would cut the english connection off a line I purchased, then put on a metric connection, and re-flare the line. Make SURE you get a good double-flaring tool, the double-flaring this is a PIA for real!!! Do some tests on some junk line before you havk up your good brake line. It took me a good 5 times to get it so that I could make a good flare and not a mashed nasty knob :-)


Notes on having no abs:
My suggestion to anyone who wants to do this, is to NOT do it unless you seriously track the car, and even then, unless you can brake like 'mikawl shoe-maker', leave it in. Now with that being said, I like it (heheheh). I actually like the pedal feel you get with no abs, but it is VERY difficult to master (at least for me). You have to change your braking style (hard in, then back off to stock lockup, less trail braking so inside doesnt lockup, et ,et) There are arguments that you can bake better than the abs, especially if you have bigger diameter rim/wheel combination that would throw the abs off a bit. But I suggest you keep your abs in unless your serious about it. If you are a real track junkie and really want to learn the skill of threashold braking without abs, then do it up, I really enjoy the challenge it provides an the track. If its a street car then I would NEVER remove the ABS, just dont do it, its silly.

My first session with no ABS was at RoadAmerica, very high speed track with massive straight and HARD braking zones.... I went into the gravel pits 5 times on the first session (hahahahah). Needless to say I had to change my brake bias, I was lockin em up all over the place, but, now I have my bias set to a good spot and i am am much better at braking with no abs .....I am pulling very fast times at the tracks, partly because of the great braking power my car has, (as long as I keep them from lockin up) so for now I will keep the abs out of the track car.

Damian needs his own sticky section in the 3ed gen thread. You make the greatest write ups man. I'm not even surprised that the best one to be found on this subject with clear picture sis by you. By the way I was just looking at that wilwood PV. How do you liek it and why did you choose that one?

I really liked the Willwood PV, very nice.

BTW I say 'liked' because its no longer on my tack car, I installed a full dual mastercylinder manual setup with a balance bar (from fritz track car, was brad barbers car - killer bee).

I am still working out brake pedal 'issues', but will post a thread on that once i get it worked out.

I'm just guessing here, but why not? Disconnect the balance bar when bleeding so you can do the fronts and rears separately. HTH.
