About to drive my FD after being idle for months...
 

My FD has been garaged for months after I had my engine rebuilt and ported. I haven't really ran the engine in a long while either. Now, I'm about to have to start it up so I can drive it over to my buddy's house for an attempt at the DIY vacuum hose job.

I know I should check the water and oil before I start it up, but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions on starting/running our cars after being idle for extended periods of time.

BTW,under the radiator-cap looks a little rusty-colored (but not rustED)...should I be concerned?

Prime the fuel system to minimize the amount of cranking time.

Jump pins 3 and 5 on the top row of the 2-row block (there are 2 blocks, one has 2 rows, the other has 3 rows) on the diagnostic connector right of the battery. Then turn to ignition (but not start) to prime the fuel system for 10 seconds.

Other than that, you should be fine, honestly.

i would let the fuel system prime itself as the engine cranks...this will give the oil system a chance to prime before the engine starts...better to get oil in the motor before the fuel gets to it.....

and be sure the fuel is fresh...bad gas can cause some serious problems....good luck!!..

On top of that, you can always break out the 19 mm socket and do a good round of manual eccentric shaft rotation exercises too. :)

If it's only been a few months, just make sure your oil and water level is good and start it up. You don't need to do anything special. Priming the fuel is a waste of time, and so is turning the engine over with a ratchet.

Seriously, after a few months in stationary mode, I would not allow the engine to start at it's 3K rpm warm-up. At start up hit the excellerator and let idle at lower rpm. Just to make sure the oil gets a chance to do it's job. (The engine does have oil in it, right??) :)

There will probably be no problem. Mine sits for 6 months every winter. I just put in the battery and start it up. If you are stock, put it in gear with the clutch depressed when you start it and it will not go to 3K.
