About to buy RX7 also...

Hello, im completely new to the forums and to RX7s, so please dont flame me and call me names because I dont really have any idea what im taking about. I'm currently talking with a guy about purchasing his 1993 RX7. Selling it for 4,700 bucks, 67,000 miles, and so far it apears there is nothing wrong with it. O and its auto :( but o well, I'm 16 and my parents thinking about getting it for me. I have been doing some research on it and it seems they need love, which im will to give it. I'm very interested in cars and im sure there are classes that give u the basics of this engine. the car looks really clean and well kept, are there any red flags i should look for when i drive it for the first time? I also have a list of the first couple of upgrades i plan on doing for better engine life.
new radiator - http://www.rx7store.net/ProductDetai...+Flow&CartID=1
blow off valves - http://www.rx7store.net/ProductDetai...pe+RS&CartID=5
Boost gauges/ water temp gauge

Any inpute except negative or flame towards me would be great. Let me know if im in the right track and please dont complain about the auto trans unless it posses some sort of mechanic failure that the 5spd doesnt have. My parents are buying this so they want it to be auto. Hey if your parents were just going to give u an rx7 would you complain about if it was auto or 5spd???

Small correction to your post:
Rx7 don't "need" love... every car kind of does...... RX7 really NEEDS MONEY. Lots of it.

4.7k seems cheap, specially if its in good working order.... but i'm not a USA guy, so i might be wrong and off regarding the prices...

List the mods already done to the car if you know.......... and read the FAQ.

yea seriously, 4k? unless hes a good friend of yours i'd be real careful about that car. but check this link out, theres a link within that link that'll show you what to look for when buying an fd. http://www.rx7.org/Robinette/

it does need love but money is alot better in this case. its not that its an rx-7 that you should worry about, its an old car. and when the car does die, it'll cost alot to fix. especially the rx-7. if you really want your first car to be a wankel, i'd recommend the 2nd generation model.

read the faqs and you'll understand https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

seriously, for $4700, it's either a scam or a lemon.

and $4700 is a great price for a lemon as well.

Either way, at 16 this is way too much car for you. Both in the sense of its power and in the sense of how expencive maintnence/gas/insurance are.

If your parents think they're buying you a $5k first car, they're sorely mistaken. It's both a coffin and a money hole. I'll bet you find out the engine needs rebuilt and you'll need another $5k to get it running again.

true that ^

turbos only last on average to about 70k-75k miles depending on how the car was driven and depending on boost issued.

the engine itself might get you to 80k miles, if your lucky some people get theres to 100k or so. but for 5k i cant even believe that it moves

16 is NOT a good age to be driving and taking care of an rx7. especially since its high maintence and that peticular one is high milage. start out with a beater and wait on the fd if thats what you have your heart set on.

wolf_9782 12-20-07 08:47 AM

id wait until you have a steady job, older, and extra cash in the bank. your parents may be buying a rolling chasis as well so if you do want to buy it anyway give it a compression test. if the owner doesnt agree to it then do your parents and yourself a favor....walk away.

ok, thanks a lot guys. Well im willing to spend the extra time on the maintance, and im willing to learn about it. Money isnt really that big of an issue and my friends dad owns 5 rx7's along with my uncle used to own 2, so mechanically speaking i have help in that air, but really thanks a lot for the input. and for the person who said it has too much power for a 16 year old, well i already totaled one car(flipped it) so that has pretty much taught me my lesson about when it is save to drive a little faster and when its not. lol but ya...

MrNizzles 12-20-07 01:09 PM

The fact that you have already had a roll over accident speaks VOLUMES about what you should NOT get into. What car did you roll? I wish I had parents like some of you kids ... 16 and already 1 accident and they are ready to purchase a cheap FD for you AND continue to buy parts and spend more money for repairs to keep it running?! WOW! Can your family adopt ME?! I love to bbq and I'm super clean ... (I'm a little heavy on the pr0n side, but who isn't these days :lol2:

I dunno if I believe all this, I'd have to meet your parents :Wconfused

And just cuz you had 1 accident, doesn't mean you have "learned your lesson so its NEVER going to happen again due to "not knowing how far to take the car" .. blah blah blah " .. I'm sure that's EXACTLY what your parents insurance company is saying!!

The lesson is not when to drive fast, it's that you shouldn't drive fast on the street. Period. But if something happens on the road, you still don't have any experience or training to help you avoid the worst possible result. As it is now, you're at the complete mercy of circumstance and physics. That's why I firmly believe it's not enough to drive carefully in a car like this; you need to know what you're doing. We were all beginning drivers, and hopefully we're all actively working to become better drivers. Just like I know better than to climb into the cockpit of an F1 car, the FD is not for a beginner driver.

If money is not an issue you will have no problem doing autocrosses and track days. That's where you should focus your attention.

But in the end if you want to buy FDs and wreck them that's your business. Just don't hurt anyone else or their property.

+1!!! This car is not the car to learn on. Get an FC, learn on that. Who knows, you might change your mind about rotaries after a year of driving, maintaining and paying insurance. Like this kid here wanted an FD but had no expirence driving, well he knew better, because after talking to forum members he changed his mind and now is looking S2000.

Scam IMO. Don't buy this car unless you see it and get to drive it in person. This car is probably not the one you should learn how to drive in, auto or not.

pimpin_24rx7 12-20-07 05:40 PM

sounds like a scam im selling mine for 5k with a bad motor so 4,700 don't sound like a real deal

badddrx7 12-20-07 06:28 PM

16 ! This car will take you quickly to the grave...

The best advise I could give you is to get a Civic. You will understand later

later

#1 sounds like a scam @ that price unless it's really, really beat up.

#2 don't buy it. learn how to drive & get a good full-time job first.

#3 you don't need to buy a blow off valve as a first mod. i've got about $15k (of work & parts) into my FD now and i'm still using the stock blow off valve :D
