..And where are you going to find someone to finance a 14 year old car?Regardless,I was simply stating that if you have to start borrowing money just for the purchase of the car,not including all of the probable future repairs to come, you are risking a big chance of finding yourself knee-deep in debt.

"Theorie's" car needed a new clutch too. I doubt that went bad from, "a whole lot of sitting". Sounds like the previous owner drove the **** out of the car. FWIW, my FD has 30K too and my turbos and clutch are just fine.

Incidentally, there are several ways to finance an older car. They come in the form of modified personal loans. I got some funds for my FD (I didn't finance the whole thing) from CapitalOne Auto Loans. Pretty straight forward.

Still, debt sucks, and unless you are able to manage money REALLY well, it can pin you pretty fast.

Mate, borrow the money, but only borrow if its going to allow you to get a very tidy car, otherwise its not worth it. Everyone has some sort of debt, the trick is to make it managable.

Theres plenty of other cool cars and if you want a rotor how about a very nice FC instead of an Ok FD!

I'm not trying to be a naysayer, I'm definately not trying to discourage him from buying an FD, I'm just saying that he needs to be made aware of just how expencive these cars are.

I bought one with low mileage, modded with reliability and in perfect condition. Thats the way to go. cost me £10570 (around $20000). Low mileage and good condition are most important. Mods are pointless if the engine is on its way out.

Yes,most were financed at some point..Like when they were brand new??I want you to go to your bank right now,and ask for $15k-$20k for an automobile loan on a 14 year old car,and come back to me with your results.

I put mine on a card. Kind of a cool story. You know those offers that come in for 2.9%apr for the balance of a loan? I called them and said, can I use this to buy a car? The guy was like, "what do you mean?"

I said, "Well, I found a car I want for $16,500, and this is the best rate I'm going to get because the banks are going to charge me like 8% for a 1994 car. Can I put a car purchase on a card?"

The dude put his manager on and he said, "sure you can. . . just make sure you are not late on any payments, and that you don't use the card for anyting else, because the initial balance gets paid off before any new charges."

I wrote the check to myself for $12,000, cashed it, went and bought the car with $16,500 cash (talk about a roll of dough!).

That was a little over 3 years ago, car is paid off. . .and got a great rate.
